Former Colorado player thinks CU is “the worst program in the nation”
Matt McChesney wanted to get something off his chest about his alma mater, so he unloaded on the Colorado football program.
The former Colorado defensive lineman, who played with the Buffaloes from 2000-04, now hosts a show on Mile High Sports radio in Denver. And according to the Boulder Daily Camera, he ripped the Buffaloes in just about every way possible on the air.
Colorado has played three games. CU lost its opener to Colorado State, which has since lost convincingly to North Dakota State from the FCS and by 20 points to San Jose State. Then the Buffaloes lost to Sacramento State, a FCS team, on a last-second field goal at home. Last Saturday is probably what caused McChesney, who played in four NFL regular-season games in his career, to snap. Colorado lost 69-14 to Fresno State.
"I'd like to give [coach Jon] Embree and E.B. [offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy], the benefit of the doubt, but it's really hard for me to do that after 69 points to Fresno and losing to Sac State and losing to CSU, and then having to look at our conference schedule the way we do," McChesney said [according to the Daily Camera]. "I mean, I don't see a team that we can score a touchdown on let alone win. They're going to all score 60 points on us."
You'd think predicting the Buffaloes would give up 60 points to every Pac-12 opponent without scoring a touchdown in any of those games would be the highlight of his rant, but he was just getting warmed up.
Here's the summation:
• McChesney believes there's a chance Colorado could go winless this season, and said CU is "the worst program in the nation."
• He thinks the players, at least some of them, quit on Saturday.
• Defensive coordinator Greg Brown "would be fired today," if McChesney were in charge. ("They are not responding to his coaching whatsoever," he said.)
• While he went out of his way to say he wasn't calling for Embree to be fired, he didn't endorse him either, saying he puts none of the blame on former coach Dan Hawkins. ("This is Embree's watch," McChesney said. "It's his responsibility.")
• McChesney called out the seniors for lack of effort and believes they should be benched.
• Without changes, he said, Colorado will continue "to slide down the mountain of irrelevancy."
There wasn't much McChesney didn't check off on the list of failure. For Colorado, which went 3-10 in Embree's first year as coach last season, this could end up being a long, miserable season.
