Former Bowling Green OL settles with school regarding concussions

Former Bowling Green offensive lineman Cody Silk earned a settlement of $712,500 from his former university after claims that he suffered a permanent brain injury as a result of coaches and trainers allowing him to play following a series of concussions.

Silk, a redshirt freshman on the 2010 team, told the Ohio Court of Claims that he had suffered two concussions, but was allowed to participate in full-contact practice until he suffered a third concussion and was ultimately medically disqualified from the team.

Initially, the court found against Silk, saying he’d signed a release of liability to play football and subsequently accepted the risk that came with the sport. However, Silk refilled last year and despite a state attorney claiming Silk exaggerated the trauma suffered to his brain, a settlement was reached. However, under the term of the settlement, Bowling Green did not admit fault for Silk’s injuries and Silk cannot file any further suits against the university.

At the time, Bowling Green was coached by Dave Clawson, who is now the head coach at Wake Forest.
