Former Baylor RB Terrance Ganaway, now with the Rams, is becoming a great Jimmy Johns employee this offseason

A year ago, running back Terrance Ganaway shared the Baylor backfield with Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III. This past season, he tried to make waves in an incredibly crowded St. Louis Rams backfield.

And for the past couple months, he’s worked incredibly hard to become freaky fast.

Ganaway has spent much of his offseason working out and working as a sandwich maker at Jimmy Johns - he restaurant that claims it makes its "subs so fast, you'll freak" - in Waco, Texas.

“I’m on the line that makes the sandwiches,” Ganaway told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “I bake bread. Take the cashier spot. I had to sweep the other day. Clean the tables. I mean, all types of stuff. Slice the meat. Wrap the meat.

“I’m in the heat of the battle. Trying to make sandwiches fast is Jimmy John’s policy, so it’s kind of stressful.”

Ganaway went back to Waco after the season, but didn’t want too much idle time and didn’t want to spend too much money. So, he sent out a tweet looking for work and a Jimmy Johns employee tweeted that they were hiring. Ganaway inquired and ultimately got the job.

He works 12 hours a week, 5-9 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

It’s not like Ganaway needs the money. Even though he only appeared in three games for the Rams last season and didn’t record a carry or catch, he still made the league minimum of $390,000. At Jimmy Johns, he rakes in about $7.25 or $7.50 a hour, he’s not really sure. But he said he’s enjoyed the camaraderie, learning the sandwiches and even the pressure of making sandwiches in a timely manner.

As far as people knowing who he is, he said it doesn’t happen often. He’s wearing an apron and a visor and usually has his head down. But he did say that one night he gave out his autographed rookie card to every 25th customer and he does engage fans who want to talk about football.

“My No. 1 job is being an NFL player,” Ganaway told the paper. “So don’t get it confused as to me working at Jimmy John’s has me lazy. ... I know what I have to do. I know how to get in shape and I know what it takes to perform at a high level. Really, Jimmy John’s is just to keep me out of trouble in all the down time we have in the offseason.”
