Davis Webb practices Tuesday, could start against Kansas State

After suffering a left shoulder injury in Thursday night's loss to Oklahoma State, Texas Tech QB Davis Webb's status is day-to-day according to coach Kliff Kingsbury on Monday.

However, Webb might have taken a step towards playing Saturday against Kansas State during Tuesday's practice.

A spokesperson for Texas Tech confirmed to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal that Webb practiced Tuesday. Webb had been seen fully dressed for practice.

When Kingsbury addressed Webb's status Monday, he said Webb needed to be able to protect his shoulder. When Webb was scrambling in the fourth quarter against Oklahoma, his left forearm landed on the turf and his arm jammed into his shoulder.

"Just make sure he can protect himself, really, and operate at a level we need him to operate," Kingsbury said Monday. "But more than anything, that he can handle taking a hit and protect himself."

Webb is 118-186 passing for 1,356 yards, 14 touchdowns and six interceptions through four games. Against Oklahoma State he threw 54 passes in just over three quarters worth of action. The six interceptions have come in three games. He threw two in a close win against Central Arkansas and two each in losses to Arkansas and OSU. The Red Raiders are 2-2.

Following the injury, Webb went to the locker room in obvious discomfort but returned to the sidelines a short time later without a look of incredible pain on his face. However he wasn't cleared by Tech's medical staff to re-enter the game for fear of instability in the shoulder.

He was replaced by freshman Patrick Mahomes against Oklahoma State. Mahomes would get the start if Webb is unable to go.

"[Mahomes] gets a ton of reps during the week, so we'll make sure we script it appropriately," Kingsbury said. "But he gets plenty of reps where we can get him things that we know he's comfortable with and get him repped."
