Danny O’Brien’s departure from Maryland was a long time coming

Danny O'Brien and Randy Edsall (Patrick Semansky/AP)

In a move that came as a surprise to no one, quarterback Danny O'Brien has decided to leave Maryland and leave a trail of uncertainty in his wake.

Since Randy Edsall became the Terrapins head coach, 24 players with eligibility remaining have left the program, including 12 since the season ended. Those 12 players have taken 48 starts with them and a lot of the meager confidence Edsall had from the fanbase as the Terrapins leader.

"I'm disappointed by Danny's decision," coach Randy Edsall said in a statement released by the school. "Danny told me that he's not committed to our program, that he's not 'all in.' I want what's best for all of our players. Danny wants a fresh start elsewhere. I wish him well."

Not sure why Edsall is so disappointed. He set O'Brien's transfer in motion against Georgia Tech back in October when he benched the 2010 starting quarterback in favor of C.J. Brown, who is now the only quarterback on the roster with any experience.

Benching O'Brien displayed a lack of confidence in a quarterback that helped lead Maryland to a 9-4 record under former coach Ralph Friedgen and earned ACC Rookie of the Year honors. And Edsall never did anything to really help O'Brien get that confidence back. In fact, he did just the opposite by telling the Washington Times in November that he should have minimized the expectations on O'Brien from the start.

"Again, I think sometimes that expectations on young people can make it tough as well," Edsall told the paper. "Maybe I didn't do a good enough job of minimizing expectations for him. So again, I think those are things we all can learn from. The only thing that you can do is go out and do your best. Some days, you're going to be good. Some days, you're not going to be good."

Danny O'Brien (Patrick Semansky/AP)O'Brien responded like any competitor by saying that he placed high expectations on himself. That retort made it clear that a rift was growing between player and coach even though O'Brien remained positive in his public comments about Edsall and the competition with Brown.

Even though O'Brien threw for a paltry 1,648 yards with seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions last season, he'll be one of the hot commodities in the transfer market. One possible destination for the redshirt sophomore is Vanderbilt. O'Brien went to Maryland because of offensive coordinator James Franklin, who is now the head coach of the Commodores. The Baltimore Sun also noted that Wisconsin, Stanford and Michigan State also could use an established quarterback. O'Brien is on track to graduate this spring, which would mean he could enroll at a new institution for grad school and, per NCAA rules, be eligible to play right away.

As for Maryland, which also lost offensive lineman Max Garcia and linebacker Mario Rowson on Monday, the future is beginning to look bleak. Not only has there been a mass exodus from Edsall's reign, he also told a radio station back in November that he considered Maryland — a team that was 9-4 when he took over and returned several players from that squad — a rebuilding project, which didn't sit well with anyone.

Edsall was already on thin ice heading into the 2012 season and O'Brien's transfer just certainly hasn't helped. If Maryland can't manufacture a miracle in 2012, he might be on his way out the door.

I always thought it was a NCAA rule that players had to sit out a year if they transferred to another D-I school... but it is up to the college? Is that right? Players only get a 1 year scholarship which the school has to renew every year.. If the school renews it, the player is bound, but if the school does not renew, the player is out on the street....... so the school is only making a 1 year committment to the player..... players should be able to transfer freely to any school after the end of each year since the player has fulfilled all obligations under the one year scholarship...... plus if players could freely transfer, you'd see coaches' contracts with big buy out penalties and see schools keeping coaches to the end of their contracts... Probably see coaches' salaries fall..

You do what Maryland's AD did to Ralph Friedgen and it will come back to bite you!!

Just a thought, never should have fired "The Fridge".

All athletic grant in aid should be for four years, but allow the kid not to play, receive his or her aid, and not count against the program's number of grants. Poor coaching choice. Bad AD.

He must really be rubbing the players the wrong way, all sports are about politics as in if the coach doesn't like your playing style he'll not play you at all. Prime example: John Calipari at Kentucky. From no postseason games to Final 4 in his first year, He did it by getting rid of the players UK had when he got there and inserting his own. Stephon Goode will start for the Terps this year because they don't have any explosive playersl. ....still think they should've never forced out the Fridge....he recruited well in the area although he's teams were only average...its a shame.

Talking about digging a whole and throwing dirt in on yourself! Randy seem like he was ready to self destruct before the season started!! How about building on a 9-4 team. Re-build, sonds like he is in over his head!! bye-bye!!

It came as no surprise that Danny left the program , even though the team had a real good recruiting season . But if your not into the new bosses ways of doing things i guess its best for all parties . Good luck Danny the Randy Edsall watch is on and AD. Kevin Anderson will be feeling the heat if Edsall can not improve upon last seasons disaster .

It's time for Stephon Diggs to reconsider his letter to Maryland. As a Maryland alumnus and long time Terps fan (I remember WATCHING Gary and Ralph playing in their sports), my advice to Stephon is that if you want to come to Maryland for an education, you couldn't have picked a better school. They have great professors and programs there and you will learn a lot. If you came to "win championships and go to bowl games", like you stated, then you have picked the wrong school. Not only is the talent not there but the control freak head coach will make the experience horrible. Leave your hat, "do-rag", jewelry, and personality at the door, son! These players are leaving for a reason.

What? There are a hundred better schools for an education!

What tabloids are you reading Drewww? Maryland is rated very highly, particularly in the sciences. Look it up.

O'Brien can't go to Vandy; Edsall made that a condition of his release. UMD alums & supporters are abandoning the football program in droves & for the second year in a row, the AD & President have created a public relations nightmare.

I never could understand a coach going public or pointing a finger at a player as a potential problem, when they preach "win as a team" or "there is no i in team"
      • Get real, people! 3 months ago
There is definitly an "i" in Randy Edsall somewhere. Perhaps he should start spelling his first name Randi.

It is not about the team it is about the WIN and there is an I right in the middle of WIN. Don't be a pansy.

So are they going to get rid of the ugly uniforms? I get the Maryland state flag is weird but those uniforms are more distracting than Boise St's field turf.

i think that the coach of maryland better just give up coaching college.and go do maybe high school or middle school. to many kids leaving the maryland program because of him. not good at all.

Diggs should pull his letter of intent and go speak with Urban Meyer. Sounds as if this coach has set this program back 4yrs or more. To bad, it was fun watching their game against Clemson last year!
