Update: Chip Kelly ends his first NFL fling (for now)

    buffett.jpg

Chip Kelly does everything else fast, so it probably shouldn't come as any surprise that it took him just a few hours to make up his mind on serious overtures from the NFL. But on the heels of late-breaking headlines Sunday night confirming his pending exit from Oregon, it turns out even college football's most celebrated leadfoot is susceptible to a bout of cold feet. From The Register-Guard:

University of Oregon football coach Chip Kelly told a highly placed UO source late Sunday night that he has reversed course and decided to turn down an offer from the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The source told The Register-Guard earlier Sunday night that Kelly had reached an agreement to become Tampa Bay's head coach. "It's done," the source said.

Just before midnight, Kelly changed his mind, telling the source: "I'm staying."

Kelly told one assistant coach Sunday night that he had been offered the Tampa Bay job, but Kelly told him he wasn't certain what he would do.

As of Monday morning, Kelly has apparently decided to stick with the program he's built into a consistent national contender in Eugene, at least temporarily defusing visions of a ticking NCAA time bomb in the process. The fit just wasn't right: Kelly is a career college coach with just three years as a head coach under his belt, just five years removed from the offensive coordinator gig at New Hampshire. The wildly productive system he's honed and perfected over the last decade likely will not translate well to the next level, especially on a team with a 250-pound starting quarterback who's not much of a threat to run. Kelly's not a young man (he turned 48 in November), but at this point in his career, a move to the next level would be primarily an exercise in ego, waiting to blow up in everyone's face in two or three years.

Besides: NCAA investigation notwithstanding, there's no reason he can't finish what he started at Oregon by winning a national championship. Now that the whole NFL thing is (presumably) over, the pedal is hereby cleared for return to the metal.

Love the comments about Chips track record. Look at his overall record. He is doing g this at OREGON not USC or Texas or OKLAHOMA ETC. Shame on him for winning the Pac12 all three years he has coached, shame on him for going to 3 bcs games in 3 years, Shame on him for losing the national title........ you can keep hating and he will keep winning 34-6 overall... man he sucks

He may not suck...he also doesn't do it the right way. The probation that's on the horizon is proof.

Oregon has more money than God (who is Phil Knight in disguise). Not a lot of trouble getting recruits with those facilities and money.

I'm glad to hear that Chip Kelley is staying in Oregon! He has brought so much excitement and attention to Oregon and the PAC 12 conference in all. Something that is long overdue for this region!!! Go Ducks!!!!!

Get used to it Duck fans. USC went through this every year during the Pete Carroll era.

        Maybe, because they were...ummm...GUILTY!!

LOLz. Guilty of what? And please don't say cheating. That's what ignorant college football fans who don't know their #$%$ from a hole in the ground would say. The only thing Pete and USC failed to do was not monitor a student-athlete's parents living arrangements when they lived two hours and some change away? That's essentially what happened. Did Reggie know? Not a doubt in my mind but the punishment did not fit the crime, especially after the p#$%$es give to Auburn and THE Ohio State (and probably Miami very soon) The NCAA sucks.

        Solipsist,

When you stop hugging Carroll's nuts for a second please explain why he jumped the sinking USC ship quicker than any rat ever would have.

People say Pac-10 isn't as good as SEC and Big 12 so why are NFL only hiring head coaches from pac-10? Pete Carroll, Jim Harbaugh, Lane Kiffin, Mike Riley, Dennis Erickson, Rich Brooks all made the jump from Pac-10 coach to NFL head coach and now potentially Chip Kelly. On the other hand, only Steve Spurrier, Nick Saban, Butch Davis, and Bobby Petrino are from other major conferences. No Bob Stoops, Mack Brown, Urban Meyer, Jim Tressell, Les Miles, Frank Beamer, Lloyd Carr, Bobby Bowden, Tom Osborne, Mike Gundy, Bill Snyder, or Tommy Tuberville.

they have good coaches, whoopee. they arent on the same level as the sec, maybe the big 12
      • Sheboleth 4 months ago
Fry you can't be that stupid, they lost to auburn by what 3 points in the national championship, that's the same level no argument at all. To act like the SEC is better is not only ridiculous, but idiotic. Yes the sec is good, but the truth is the PAC could win the next 5 in a row by 3 points each or 30 points. I look at Oregon and USC and they aren't one year shots out of the blue like most of the SEC winners, Oregon and USC hang around in the top 10 year after year. For example, where was Auburn this year?

THANK GOD Chip Kelly is staying at Oregon. Seriously though, who in their right mind wants to coach the Bucs??? That's a lose, lose situation, and he knows it. Regardless though, I think if he wins a national title next season, he's gone....:(
      • newatthis 3 months ago
One person, concerning him or herself, doesn't really face a "lose, lose" situation like you imply. If the team where he goes also loses, it's not a concern to him. Chip is facing a losing situation, not a lose lose situation.

In this day of the over priced primadonnas everywhere in pro sports, it makes me proud not only as a Duck fan, but as a human being to see a man stick with the plan regardless of what the penalties he is facing. This is NOT USC where everyone runs to the NFL when the shiznit hits the fan. This is Oregon, baby!!

      Go Ducks!!!
      • Francisco Silva 4 months ago
Yeah wait until uncle Phil stops paying the NCAA's bills and you will see how harsh the penalties will be

yeah 48 is ancient. And what the hell does age have to do with this article anyhow? How old is this writer, 21? And excuse me, but Coughlin could be Kelly's father. I D I O T !

Once again, I'm challenging you haters to identify the violations brought by the NCAA against Oregon and the punishments received.
    • Taste  •  Eugene, Oregon  •  4 months ago
Good choice for now. Hope he can recruit some D players. If we have a good D the Ducks should fair just fine. USC bring it on Barkly played the best game of his life so far when he beat the Ducks.

His system wouldn't work in the NFL anyway. All you need to stop it is a good defensive line and most teams in the NFL have that. He would have had the upside though of being able to draft guys who had great athletic ability but did not fit the prototype of what other coaches want in a receiver. In his system it really doesn't matter if a receiver is 5'8" because he isn't going out to try to out jump a cornerback.
    • James B  •  4 months ago
Glad he's staying for now, college ball seems more tolerant of the wide-open fun, style that the Ducks use...
One day, I hope to see if what he does can work in the NFL...

Good move. You can make the same money with a bit more job security. In the NFL one bad season can get you fired. NFL owners like to fire their coaches instead of fixing their teams.

Obvious reasons he didn't accept (not enough money and length of contract) yet.
    • anthony  •  4 months ago
Glad to see he's staying. It would'nt be the same to got to USC next year and kick their #$%$ without him runnnig the show.

Because he knows he would suck in the nfl

Chip just called a double reverse with Nike's Phil Knight coming up with more money for him to stay in Oregon.

The broncos proved that you can win some games in the NFL running the spread offense. They have absolutely no speed so imagine if Chip Kelly was the NFL coach of a team with an athletic QB who could throw and some good skill position players. You dam right that offense would work.I mean come on the Colts Vikings Browns Rams all proved running NFL offenses don't always work by displaying just horrific records this year.So yea a spread option type offense could work.Patriots Packers and Bills already are running spread offense with 4 and 5 receiver sets most of the game. They're just pass heavy.Oregon will be fine this year Bryan Bennet whom I went to school with at Crespi High is ready to step in he's more athletic than Darron Thomas and sure Lamichael left but Kenjon is a star in his own right plus Deanthony will be back.Pac 12 is weak excluding USC and Oregon, winner of that game will probably play in BCS title game.Although I haven't seen their preseason schedule yet but both will run the table in the Pac 12.Finally Yes Chip Kelly will go the NFL soon and if he has the right personnel to start out with it will work
