Cal safety Damariay Drew was charged Monday with felony assault after Drew allegedly punched another Cal student at least three times in the face.
The alleged victim will likely need facial reconstructive surgery and sustained a broken jaw, according to court documents. Drew, a redshirt freshman in 2013, was charged with assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury. He's been suspended from the football team.
According to an affidavit from Berkeley police, Drew and the alleged victim were in a verbal confrontation during a fundraiser at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house. The victim told police that Drew kicked his Jack Russell mix and Drew said the dog bit him, leading to the exchange of words. Per the Daily Californian, Drew then said "I'm going to ---- you up" before allegedly punching him.
Drew's arraignment has been rescheduled for Friday. He was identified by two witnesses as the suspect.
A three-star recruit out of high school, Drew played in all 12 of Cal's games last year and started three. He had 52 total tackles, three pass breakups and a fumble recovery.
