Bethune-Cookman linebacker killed in shooting

Bethune-Cookman linebacker Don’Kevious Johnson was killed in a shooting early Saturday morning.

According to the Palm Beach Post, Johnson was wounded during a fight shortly after 1 a.m. at the clubhouse of Indigo Lakes Golf Club in Daytona Beach, Florida. Police said several involved in the fight went outside the clubhouse and Johnson and two other Bethune-Cookman students, a man and a woman, were shot.

According to WKMG, the two other students, Justine Cunningham and Tre Jamal Williams, both 21, remain hospitalized. Cunningham was shot in the head and is listed in critical condition while Williams, who sustained a gunshot to the back, is in stable condition.

The alleged shooter, Lamont Postell Jr., turned himself into police on Saturday afternoon. He faces a first-degree murder charge and two counts of attempted murder.

The 23-year-old Johnson, a native of Belle Glade, Florida, transferred to Bethune-Cookman in 2014 after beginning his career at Alabama State. Johnson was majoring in psychology and held a 3.05 grade point average, the school said.

It is with saddened hearts that Bethune-Cookman (B-CU) University announces the loss of one of our students. Don'Kevious Johnson, a sophomore Psychology major with a 3.05 GPA, was fatally wounded during an off-campus shooting that took place early Saturday morning at the Indigo Lakes Golf Club, located in Daytona Beach, Florida. Two other Bethune-Cookman students were wounded in the shooting and are currently hospitalized.

The University’s Department of Public Safety is working with the Daytona Beach Police Department (DBPD), as this is an active investigation.

At Bethune-Cookman University, our first priority is the safety and wellbeing of our students. Our Critical Incident Care Team is currently providing grief counseling and support services to students who are in need.

This is a very unfortunate incident and our thoughts and prayers are with the families, loved ones and fellow classmates of these students.
