Baylor starting tackle Troy Baker out for season

Baylor starting tackle Troy Baker out for season

Another starter on the Baylor offensive line is lost for the season.

Senior tackle Troy Baker suffered a torn ACL in the third quarter of Saturday afternoon’s road loss to West Virginia.

“Troy has been a great leader, so that’s going to be a void,” head coach Art Briles said Monday per the Dallas Morning News.

Though it was assumed to be an ACL tear, the severity of his injury was not known for much of Monday as the team waited for test results as Baylor finally confirmed the prognosis Monday night.

The 6-foot-7, 305-pound Baker, a fifth-year senior, registered 22 starts over the course of his career. He started all seven games at right tackle this season and previously started all 13 games for the Bears in 2012 as a sophomore. Baker suffered a similar knee injury in spring practice prior to the 2013 season, but was able to rehab and make several appearances down the stretch of the Bears' Big 12 championship run.

Briles said that junior Pat Colbert is the likely option to replace Baker in the starting lineup.

Baker is the second starting lineman to go down with a season-ending injury in recent weeks. Starting guard Desmine Hilliard underwent surgery on his wrist after getting injured in the Bears’ 61-58 win over TCU on Oct. 11.

After losing to West Virginia over the weekend, the 6-1 Bears dropped from No. 4 to No. 12 in the rankings. The team has a bye this week before facing Kansas at home on Nov. 1.
