Jose Baez, the lawyer of recently dismissed Florida State quarterback De’Andre Johnson, said his client punched a female bar patron in the face after being provoked.

Baez spoke to NBC News regarding the incident that occurred June 24:

Florida State indefinitely suspended Johnson, 19, and state attorney Willie Meggs charged him with misdemeanor battery after reviewing the surveillance footage from the club.

"It wasn't until she struck him twice that he reacted," Baez told NBC News. "But he is very...He is very regretful that he didn't turn around and walk away immediately."

"He makes no excuses for what happened.”

Court documents state the victim, a 21-year-old Florida State student, was trying to defend herself while she was being pushed and grabbed by Johnson. A witness said he heard the victim yell “no” twice before Johnson punched her.

The victim suffered a small cut to the bridge of her nose, swelling under her left eye and swelling to her left cheek.

  • Ohio State signee Mirko Jurkovic signs with Georgia after academic issue

Graham Watson at Dr. Saturday1 day ago

Offensive lineman Mirko Jurkovic, a three-star prospect from IMG Academy, tweeted Monday that he was attending Georgia this fall after originally committing to Ohio State.

According to the Columbus Dispatch, Jurkovic was denied admission to Ohio State because of academics, but apparently Georgia’s academic requirements aren’t nearly as stringent. UGASports.com, citing a source, said it wasn’t academics, but rather the fact that Ohio State had exceeded its scholarship limit that left Jurkovic available.

Either way, Ohio State’s loss is Georgia’s gain.

Jurkovic had 22 offers out of high school and, shockingly, Georgia was not one of them. But once Jurkovic became a free agent, the Bulldogs pounced. Notre Dame also courted Jukovic, but wanted him to first attend nearby Holy Cross College.

Jurkovic is the son of former Notre Dame All-American Mirko Jurkovic Sr., and the nephew of John Jurkovic who played nine years in the NFL.
