Former North Carolina offensive lineman Ryan Hoffman is homeless and battling mental illness.
A sad and must-read profile from the New York Times details Hoffman's search for money and places to sleep, his lack of short term memory and his battles with addiction.
He said he started having dangerous thoughts when he was a senior at North Carolina in 1997. He started putting things in plastic bags around his residence to remember where they were. He wasn't drafted in the NFL draft and things spiraled after college.

BYU needed another quarterback for spring practice. So instead of holding open tryouts for one, the team went and found someone who accumulated significant time under center in 2014.
Christian Stewart filled in as BYU's QB when Taysom Hill was lost for the season in 2014 because of a broken leg. But as a senior in 2014, Stewart figured his last practices would be the ones BYU held for the Miami Beach Bowl. Nope. He's back.
"What a story," BYU offensive coordinator Robert Anae said via the Deseret News. "I hope it goes down as one of the all-time great BYU stories that we had a guy that was willing to advance the team, so everyone can get better while we wait for our younger (quarterbacks) to get in and get involved."
Stewart threw for 2,273 yards, 22 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 2014.

Auburn is down a linebacker for spring practice.
According to AuburnSports.com, LB Anthony Swain is no longer with the team. Neither is punter Jimmy Hutchinson.
Both LB Anthony Swain and K Jimmy Hutchinson have left Auburn's football team. Both remain enrolled in school this semester.
At Auburn's pro day on Tuesday, Auburn coach Gus Malzahn declined to comment on his roster, instead deferring to when rosters come out at the start of spring practice.
"I'm going to update our spring roster next Tuesday, so I'm going to wait until then and I'll give you all the updates -- not just with him, but with other people, too," Malzahn said via Al.com.
Swain had 18 tackles in 2014. 12 of those came in games against Louisiana Tech, Georgia and Alabama.
Hutchinson had nine punts last year and was the No. 2 punter.

Shea Patterson is the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback in the class of 2016. He's Rivals' No. 3 prospect overall. He's listed as having a solid verbal commitment to Ole Miss.
And his brother is now a member of the Ole Miss staff.
Per the Clarion-Ledger,Sean Patterson is the associate director for recruiting operations and was added to the staff directory on Monday. Per an Ole Miss spokesperson, Sean Patterson started working at Ole Miss on Feb. 23.
While it's obvious that there are advantages to Ole Miss hiring Sean Patterson for a position that was unfilled after it was created in 2014, hiring a coach or family member of a prized recruit to the staff of a team is nothing new. There may be more notable examples in basketball, but it's not unheard of in football.
And it's not like Ole Miss is hiring Shea's brother from out of nowhere, either. It just looks really transparent.

The Kentucky depth chart at quarterback took a hit on Wednesday.
The team confirmed that redshirt sophomore quarterback Reese Phillips ruptured his Achilles tendon during a workout and will miss all of spring practice. However, according to the Herald-Leader, the team believes he could potentially return in the fall.
Phillips was the Wildcats’ No. 2 quarterback behind Patrick Towles in 2014. In three games, Phillips completed 2-of-9 passes for 45 yards with an interception.
His injury leaves the Wildcats with just two healthy quarterbacks when spring practice begins on Saturday morning – Towles and highly-touted redshirt freshman Drew Barker.
Towles threw 2,718 yards, 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 12 starts last season. Barker was questioned recently for his role in a bar fight, but has not been charged.
Former Kentucky starter Maxwell Smith, an All-SEC Freshman selection in 2012, graduated in January and transferred to San Diego State, further limiting UK’s depth at quarterback.

When two men assisted Christine Mowrer and her mother after she crashed her Jeep on Tuesday afternoon, she had no idea that one of the men was Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh.
Mowrer, 53, told MLive.com that she lost control of her Jeep Cherokee after hitting a patch of ice on I-94 in Ann Arbor. Harbaugh and UM director of football operations Jim Minick were also driving on I-94 and saw the crash occur when they were on their way to the airport.
Mowrer said her vehicle “flipped three or four times” and she and her 73-year-old mother were both partially ejected from the vehicle. Harbaugh and Minick were there for assistance until medics arrived.
“They took care of me until the ambulance got there,” Mowrer told MLive.com from St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. “I didn’t even know who he was until the state police told me later.

Auburn coach Gus Malzahn doesn't like an offseason rule proposal.
The NCAA Rules Committee will look at a proposal on Thursday that limits offensive linemen from going downfield before a pass. Currently, a lineman has a (perhaps enforced with some slack) three yard cushion to go downfield before a pass is thrown. Per the proposal, "to be legal, a lineman who is more than one yard past the line of scrimmage must be engaged with a defensive player when a pass is released."
"That's part of the creativity of the game," Malzahn said via Al.com. "I'm not into anything that takes the creativity out of the game. You know, you see a lot of coaches around the country, specifically high school coaches that are coaching in college, that's very important to them."
Malzahn's solution is that the current rule is enforced more strictly.

Virginia Tech running back Shai McKenzie has been suspended indefinitely after being arrested and charged with two counts of “contributing to the delinquency of a minor,” according to the Roanoke Times.
The charges are class one misdemeanors and have the potential for 12 months in jail and a fine up to $2,500.
Hokies head coach Frank Beamer is aware of the situation and athletic director Whit Babcock issued a statement on the program’s behalf.
“We are aware of the situation and misdemeanor arrest. We take these matters seriously,” Babcock told the Times in an email. “Coach Beamer has suspended Shai indefinitely from all team related activities as of yesterday. It’s in the hands of the proper authorities and we will respect the process.”
According to the Times, warrants were filed in Montgomery County (Va.) Court detailing an investigation into the 19-year-old McKenzie and Devin A. Gavion, an 18-year-old Virginia Tech student, for “carnal knowledge of a child between the ages of 13 and 15.”

TCU is heading east for some recruiting pointers.
Coach Gary Patterson and his staff are heading to Alabama when spring practice concludes to see how Alabama has been so successful in recent years on the recruiting trail.
“We want to see some things recruiting-wise, how they do things,” Patterson said via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “You don’t just learn Xs and Os from people. You’re trying to learn things on a lot of different levels.”
In return, Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin and his father have been looking at the characteristics of the uptempo offense TCU installed for 2014 with great success (Yes, we still remember Nick Saban's comments about tempo and player safety). The Horned Frogs only lost to Baylor en route to a 12-1 season.
