AJ McCarron’s mother declares her support for Auburn’s Tre Mason in the national championship

When Auburn plays against Florida State in the BCS National Championship on Jan. 6, running back Tre Mason will have some very unlikely fans – the family of Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron.

McCarron’s mother, Dee Dee Bonner, tweeted out support for Mason this past weekend and then showed the world shirts her family plans to wear during the national championship.

Of course, Alabama fans immediately pounced on McCarron’s outspoken mother for supporting a team that many Tide faithful consider the enemy. Bonner explained that she enjoyed meeting Mason when he was in New York for the Heisman ceremony with her son and that she was supporting the player and not necessarily his team.

McCarron actually started his family's support of Auburn. During the Heisman Trophy weekend, McCarron unabashedly told media he was rooting for Auburn to win the national title simply because he was supporting the Southeastern Conference.

But we can all understand why Alabama fans might not be too thrilled with the McCarron family’s new affinity toward their in-state rival. It was Auburn’s improbable field goal return for touchdown that cost Alabama a trip to the SEC title game and a possible third consecutive trip to the national championship.

While Bonner might have taken major flack for her public support of Auburn’s running back, Mason was more than thrilled to acknowledge her love.
