Rutgers’ 29-16 loss to Notre Dame during the Pinstripe Bowl on Saturday was the Scarlet Knights' final game in the America Athletic Conference and the AAC is going to make sure the school remembers it – by withholding its payout.

According to The Star-Ledger, the league is going to withhold the $1.5 million bowl payout because of the ongoing legal dispute regarding Rutgers' exit fee to bolt to the Big Ten.

The two parties are quibbling over the $10 million exit fee and remain in litigation. Rutgers suit claims “the Big East has elected not to enforce the bylaws, including the 27-months provision (waiting period) and payment of withdrawal fees, consistently and uniformly to the detriment of the remaining members of the Big East.”

Neither the AAC nor Rutgers would comment to The Star-Ledger because of the ongoing litigation.

Both parties could resolve this matter before bowl payments are made to the school in the spring.

West Virginia, which left for the Big 12 two years ago, paid a $20 million exit fee, but did not have to wait 27 months to make its exit. Syracuse and Pittsburgh, who are joining the ACC next year, both negotiated $7.5 million exit fees and only had to wait a year before leaving.

TCU paid the league $5 million for agreeing to join from the Mountain West and then instead accepting an invitation to the Big 12.
