816 Boyz make a rap song dedicated to Iowa State football
It's not that crazy to see a big name from the hip-hop world at a USC or UCLA game, but it is a bit peculiar when a known rapper represents for Iowa State.
The slickly produced "Comin Thru" by the 816 Boyz, which includes Tech N9ne, is an ode to Cyclones football. How did Tech N9ne, who has released a dozen albums, end up doing a song about Iowa State?
The Des Moines Register explains that Iowa State defensive lineman Jake McDonough was doing security at a concert when he met Tech N9ne's uncle. McDonough told him he did beats for songs, and that meeting eventually led to the making of "Comin Thru." The song grew to include Iowa State's drum line and guitarist Tyler Mock, an ISU student.
The song is more professional and well done than a lot of college football related rap songs. Still, it's almost impossible to write a classic rap song about football. The lyrics include, "Throw me the bootleg and I'm gone, then I take a few steps and I juke left and people take a deep breath and I'm up in your end zone," and "Play out of position and it's checkmate if you hesitate." That's not exactly Illmatic material there.
But still, it's a pretty cool story, and given some of the numbers we've heard dedicated to teams, the song itself isn't that bad either.
