The Wear twins are transferring, but the Tar Heels aren't worried
As North Carolina fans were bemoaning the fact that their team could be down to two post players on next season's roster, the Tar Heels themselves didn't seem especially worried about that forwards Travis and David Wear have decided to transfer.
First fellow freshman forward John Henson tweeted that "it's all good" because Roy Williams "got room to bring a couple more thoroughbreds to the stable." Then point guard Larry Drew launched the twitter hashtags #gotTwins and #theyleftbecause.
LDrew2: #theyleftbecause I still couldn't tell them apart
JohnHenson31: #theyleftbecause their pickup truck just didn't fit their lifestyle
LDrew2: #theyleftbecause they found out they would have to room with (Tyler) zeller...again
JohnHenson31: #theyleftbecause the surfing at wrightsville beach wasn't up to par
The Tar Heels can joke all they want about the Wear twins leaving Chapel Hill after just one season, but the departure of the two former McDonald's All-Americans does leave a huge void in their bench. Instead of being stocked with big men but light on guards as they were a year ago, the Tar Heels now have just Henson and 7-footer Tyler Zeller down low as a result of the Wears transferring, Ed Davis turning pro early and Deon Thompson graduating.
Talk that the Wears might transfer had been rampant in West Coast basketball circles for a few weeks, but there was no confirmation until their father spoke to the Long Beach Press Telegram on Wednesday night. Dave Wear told the paper he discussed the decision with North Carolina coach Roy Williams earlier in the evening and that he hoped his sons would receive their release "as early as Thursday."
The Wear twins will return home to Huntington Beach, Calif. to chat with their parents about what their next move will be. UCLA coach Ben Howland recruited the twins heavily while they were in high school and he has scholarships free if they decide to stay close to home.
Travis averaged 3.5 points and 2.2 rebounds in 10.3 minutes per game for North Carolina last season, while David posted 2.9 points and 1.7 rebounds per game in 10.5 minutes.
Although the Tar Heels appear confident they can survive without that production, Henson, Drew and Dexter Strickland acknowledged they'll miss the Wears after Deon Thompson chided them to "chill" on their tweets.
"You knoww I got nothing but love for them dudes," Henson wrote.
Added Strickland, "Im not talking bad about the twins at all..i have alot of love 4 those boys."
