Malcolm Delaney didn't even wait until he returned home from his NBA workouts to give his Virginia Tech teammates the good news.
Approximately 24 hours before Saturday's 5 p.m. EST deadline to withdraw from the NBA draft, the junior guard tweeted teammates Allan Chaney, J.T. Thompson and Cadarian Raines, "IM COMIN BACC TO SCHOOL... Final 4."
A Final Four might be a tad unrealistic for Virginia Tech in 2010-11, but the Hokies certainly seem to be in position to make the NCAA tournament without having to sweat out Selection Sunday as has been their custom in recent years. Virginia Tech will likely return every significant player from last year's 25-win NIT team and add Chaney, a highly touted transfer from Florida.
From an individual standpoint, Delaney also appears to be making a wise decision returning to school for his senior season. He would have been unlikely to be drafted any higher than the late second round if at all had he left school, but he will likely be one of the top returning players in the ACC next season along with Duke's Nolan Smith and Kyle Singler.
Virginia Tech coach Seth Greenberg told me a couple weeks ago his only concern about upgrading the Hokies' schedule was whether he'd have a good enough team to handle a slate laden with marquee opponents.
With Delaney back, this team is good enough. Let's hope the Hokies challenge themselves accordingly.
