UNC Greensboro wins with buzzer-beating inbound alley-oop

Trevis Simpson's alley-oop may not have been the season's most jaw-dropping dunk, but it was definitely the most timely.

With UNC Greensboro trailing The Citadel by one and inbounding the ball from the right corner with five-tenths of a second left in Saturday's game, Simpson curled around a double screen and soared unchecked to the rim. The pinpoint lob pass was perfect, enabling Simpson to slam it with two-tenths of a second remaining to give the Spartans a 67-66 win.

What was most improbable about UNC Greensboro's win was that The Citadel appeared to have clinched the victory twice in the frenetic final second of the game.

First, The Citadel's DeVontae Wright sank a go-ahead pull-up jumper with nine-tenths of a second remaining to put his team up one. Then Mike Groselle had a chance to intercept UNC Greensboro's ensuing length-of-the-floor inbound pass but he instead spiked it out of bounds, giving the Spartans one final chance at a game-winner with five-tenths of a second left.

That The Citadel twice appeared to have won the game yet somehow lost in regulation is a fitting representation of how its season has gone. The Bulldogs (4-13, 1-5) are now in last place in the South Division of the Southern Conference. UNC Greensboro isn't much better off, improving to 4-14 overall and 2-4 in league with the win.
