What we have here is, quite possibly, the last post dedicated around the Baby Blue for the rest of the season.
Last night, against one of the worst teams in the ACC, the Tar Heels stumbled across the finish line, barely beating out Kansas in the race to 2,000 wins. The Jayhawks go for 1,999 against Kansas State at home Wednesday night.
At the beginning of the year, it was considered a possibility the Tar Heels could outlast Kentucky in the quest to become the first school to reach the mark. UK2K became a reality when the Wildcats took out Drexel a few days before Christmas.
Seniors Marcus Ginyard, left, and Deon Thompson combined for 26 points in UNC's 69-62 win over "Tha U."
"This shows we can win games," Thompson said. "It was pretty doubtful there for a while that we could be as good as we should have been. There's a lot better feeling around here, and we have to build on it."
Wow. When you finally eclipse such a (special?) number and players are basically saying, "Yeah, can you believe we actually won?" you know just how down a year it's been.
But congratulations to Carolina fans, who got to such a special mark in such a special year; it was the 100-year anniversary of the birth of the basketball program in Chapel Hill this season.
