Travis Ford confident Oklahoma State has options in wake of Michael Cobbins’ injury
Travis Ford isn't sure how it all will come together over the course of the next few weeks, but the Oklahoma State coach believes his team can overcome a season-ending injury to center Michael Cobbins.
An MRI Tuesday revealed Cobbins suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in his left foot Monday early in a victory over Robert Morris. Cobbins has started all 13 games for the Cowboys this season. The Tulsa World reported he will have surgery on Thursday.
His 4.5 points and 4.3 rebounds a game this season don't seem like a lot to replace and the Cowboys will probably find a way to fill that gap, but replacing his toughness and defense might be a bigger problem. Cobbins is among the leading shot blockers in Oklahoma State history.
Ford if likely to use a combination of Kamari Murphy, Leyton Hammonds, Gary Gaskins and 7-footer Marek Soucek. The Tulsa World also reported Ford could use Le’Bryan Nash to the post at times and possibly ask Marcus Smart to play a wing with one of his teammates playing point guard.
“Nobody is going to sit around and feel sorry for us,” Ford told the newspaper. “We can all be sad for Michael, and we should be, and hold our head down for him.
“But we don’t need to hold our head down for our team. … Everybody’s going to have to step it up.”
