Texas A&M recruit dies from injuries in head-on car crash after senior prom
The Texas A&M family and everyone related to or who knew Tobi Oyedeji personally are going through some heartache and shock. The Aggies recruit from Texas' Bellaire High School was involved in a car accident Sunday morning, just after 6 a.m., after he drove friends home from their senior prom. There were many attempts to save his life, but Sunday afternoon doctors pronounced him dead.
Oyedeji was due to graduate in a couple of weeks and then was to be off to College Station, where he'd start school over the summer.
A&M coach Mark Turgeon tweeted about Oyedeji's injury Sunday morning, then resurfaced when his fate became official. Turgeon's statement:
“The world has lost a great kid today. Tobi epitomized the term student-athlete. He was a very good student. He worked hard in the classrooms and on the basketball court and he was a terrific basketball player. This is difficult to understand, and today is a very sad day. My heart aches for his mom and dad. Tobi was an only child and I would like everyone to pray for Tobi’s parents.”
It's deflating and depressing to an extreme degree. Andy Katz has a story that states how Turgeon expected the 6-9, 220-pound Oyedeji to excel in engineering and how he was such a good fit for that school and that program.
What's more heartbreaking, according to Katz's story, is that Oyedeji made a call home to his parents shortly before losing control of his car and crashing into oncoming traffic. According to FOX 26 in Houston, Oyediji crashed into one car before slamming head-on into an SUV. The driver of that SUV was pronounced dead on the scene, while the driver of the first car is said to be OK.
Our sincerest condolences to everyone affected by this terrible, unnecessary tragedy, especially Oyedeji's parents.
