Not a typo: Western Carolina 141, Toccoa Falls 39

Each time Western Carolina surpasses 100 points in a home game this season, students can exchange their ticket stubs for free tacos from a Mexican restaurant near campus.

There was probably a line out the door Tuesday night long before the final buzzer.

Western Carolina routed Toccoa Falls 141-39, shattering its school record for most points scored in one game and becoming only the fourth Division I school to win a game by more than 100 points. The Catamounts led 18-0 after 4 1/2 minutes, 72-17 by halftime and 100-26 with more than 11 minutes to play.

The 102-point margin of victory is a reflection of the vast discrepancy in talent between an average lower-level Division I program like Western Carolina (9-10) and a tiny National Christian College Athletic Association school like Toccoa Falls (3-6). The Catamounts haven't been one of the Southern Conference's stronger programs the past decade, yet they've eclipsed 100 points in five of their six meetings with Toccoa Falls since 2001 and beaten the Georgia school by no less than 58 points in each matchup.

A program of Western Carolina's caliber typically plays a lower-level school to get a routine win and collect ticket revenue, but it's certainly fair to question why the Catamounts didn't schedule a Division II or III team which could offer a more competitive game. The risk of injury in a matchup like Tuesday night's far outweighs the benefit of playing the game.

Western Carolina typically plays Toccoa Falls or similar schools in November or December, but assistant athletic director Daniel Hooker said Tuesday night that the Catamounts scheduled this game for this week to avoid a long layoff in the midst of conference play. Without the Toccoa Falls game, Western Carolina would have gone seven days between facing Furman last Saturday and playing rival Appalachian State on Saturday.

Although Western Carolina coach Larry Hunter played no starter more than 18 minutes and all 12 of his players at least 11 minutes against Toccoa Falls, it was not nearly enough to prevent the score from getting out of hand.

It wasn't how Hunter coached the game that was the issue. It was the fact that Western Carolina scheduled it at all that should be reevaluated.

Winning by 102 pts should be worth a burrito.
      • Aaron 4 months ago
The school isn't handing out the taco's. It's a small locally owned burrito shop. They handed out over $1000 of free food today.

For a National Christian College School to get to play a Division I school is huge - even if it is a small conference team. My alma mater is also an NCCAA school and played a Division 2 school for the guarantee money of $25,000. It funded the entire year and the next one also. Christian Colleges that aren't at least NAIA schools have little athletic expenses and no income for athletics, so they will gladly get pasted by NCAA schools to fund new uniforms or some academic progam.

Toccoa Falls could have just as easily won this game if it wasn't for a couple bad calls by the refs.

let's see here...the toccoa falls team apparently plays western carolina every year, and certainly has for each of the past 5 years...that tells me that there is some reason they WANT to play this team which has literally creamed, sauteed, and stir-fried them in every possible way...point is, this idiot article is about some big mismatch and blaming it on the perenially-winning team, making no mention whatsover of the other side of things...you'd think, in the 'revered status' that these guys want to yet claim for journalism, he would have at least asked about that and, along with his personal point of view, also published whatever response he'd received...me, i think sports are great, but i always wonder why anyone gets into all this 'running up the score' thing...how come 'he stole second base in the eighth inning when his team already leads by 10 runs?', all that kind of stuff...lots of these schools benefit greatly from taking on other teams who are completely superior...and in the end, if you ask the losing players, they'll tell you it was great to play against those other guys...after all, no one gets better by playing only opponents they can beat or play 'even up'...what a crock of doo doo...

higher division schools PAY the lower division schools to play them, each side gets a benefit....the lower division school gets cash, and the higher division gets a easier opponent that they can work all of their players into the game to give them some playing time, basically shaking the rust off. THATS why they keep playing them.

the real problem in all of this should be recognized as the growing group of idiots who think everything should be fair, equal, without and consideration of being the best or winning or, on the other hand, learning to handle losing with good sportsmanship but without becoming good losers...life shows all too well how the real contributors to advancement, betterment, and extended benefit of all things comes through those who push, strive, accomplish, overcome, and otherwise build dominance...and it's not only those who come in strong and well-versed who gain, get rich, etc., but also a fair percentage of those who come not very strong, not very well-versed, and who struggle to survive also learn, develop, and go on to join those who beat them in the first place...and by the way, that is what america is truly all about, and what freedom is all about...it's not the rules and the programs and guidelines and politically correct crap that gets you there...it's YOU who gets you there, through all the drubbings, disappointments, embarrassments and anything else that comes along...and always, ALWAYS, in spite of the rules and programs and preset ideas that you are presented with as you grow up and go out into the world...

How much money goes into Toccoa's coffers from playing them?

TF knows what to expect when they show up. If they were afraid of "having their feelings hurt" or whatever, they shouldn't have agreed to play WCU. It's funny how no one thinks that WCU has a decent basketball program just because they never hear of them. WCU scheduled this team later in the season for the exact reason mentioned. They didn't want to go an entire week not having played, especially right before the ASU game. Coach Hunter didn't know that the Cats would shut out TF when it was scheduled. Knowing Coach Hunter, he did not schedule this game so WCU could shut them out like that. It was just something that happened.

There should be a Mexican Restaurant in Taccoa Falls that endorses free tacos if their team loses by more than 100 points..........

The biggest question is why the heck Toccoa Falls keeps agreeing to play them. Western Carolina can't be playing in front of big crowds, so it's not like there's a big guarantee for them. After a few years of getting the ectoplasm pounded out of my team, I think I'd go find someone else to play. It's not like anyone's going to get any better playing in a game that non-competitive.

Should they have just sat on the ball for a whole half? hell they took their starters out for almost half the game... get Emilio Estevez or Martin Lawrence to coach em... they need a movie miracle getting beat like this..

Toccoa Falls doesn't play NCAA Division II. Or III. Hell, they're not even NAIA. They're NCCAA.... Division II! They're ranked 1968th in the Massey Ratings out of roughly 2100 schools, sandwiched in between a bunch of NJCAA Division III schools with 3-13 records.

What's the problem? I sure didn't see one. unless you are referring to the "everyone gets a trophy", "nobody is a loser" mentality.

I don't see Toccoa Falls complaining about the game just this idiot trying to make a story out of nothing....this is how gets to do better stories and makes more money.
    • Victoria  •  Shelby, North Carolina  •  4 months ago
If you're making this argument about WCU scheduling Toccoa Falls then you need to have the same exactly story when Alabama creams WCU in football on November 17, 2012. Alabama being a National Title winner 2 of the past 3 seasons and WCU winning 5 games in the past 3 years.

Anybody ever think that it's good for Toccoa Falls to play these better teams, so they can possibly get better in the future?
