Obama: UConn women are 'best team in all of sports'

Many championship teams have visited the White House the past two years, but few have received more superlatives from President Obama than the UConn women's basketball team.

Obama lauded the Huskies for their 78-game win streak and back-to-back national titles during Monday's East Room ceremony, calling UConn "the best team in all of sports, any sport, any gender, by far."

"This team has not lost a game since I was elected president," he said.

The visit to the White House was the second in two years for the Huskies, who predicted during last year's ceremony that they would be back again this season. Obama kidded UConn coach Geno Auriemma for encouraging his team to shoot for a 40-0 record this season, a feat that would have been awfully difficult considering the Huskies only played 39 games.

"It's not your fault he can't do math very well," Obama said to the players, drawing a laugh.

Obama received a traditional No. 1 white UConn jersey and a basketball from senior Maya Moore.

The Huskies had been hoping for a rematch with the president in a game of H-O-R-S-E, but inclement weather dashed those hopes. Last year, Obama sank a series of left-handed jumpers to beat the Huskies, a defeat players blamed on their heels and tight-fitting clothes.
