Kevin Ware left Louisville to get out of shadow of his famous injury

Former Louisville guard Kevin Ware announced earlier this month he was transferring for a fresh start and to be closer to family at Georgia State, but in a story published Wednesday by the Louisville Courier-Journal. he revealed the decision was actually made back in January.

Ware told the newspaper he was sometimes overwhelmed on campus by the curiosity and interest in his recovery from the infamous broken lower leg he suffered on national television during a 2013 Elite Eight game against Duke.

Ware said he often tried to avoid people on campus and stayed home as much as possible so he wouldn't have to endure more conversations about his recovery.

"I stayed in my room as much as I could, honestly," Ware told the newspaper. "If I didn't have to leave the house or be somewhere, I'd just stay in and watch Netflix. Everybody always asking, everybody wanting to have conversations about it. Like, why can't we just have a conversation about basketball?"

The compound fracture injury, one of the worst ever seen in a live, televised sporting event, brought fame for all the wrong reasons and made him a celebrity of sorts. He was invited to the White House correspondents dinner and did a top-10 list on the Late Show with David Letterman.

He returned to play early last season for coach Rick Pitino but was kicked in the leg in a Dec. 17 game against Missouri State and needed more time off to heal again. He said he finally met with coach Rick Pitino in January and they agreed it would be best for him to transfer, but also agreed not to make the move public until after the season.

"I just feel like me leaving is a fresh start," Ware said. "I know a lot of people think of me and think of the leg. But, I mean, I play basketball. I don't want to be known as a guy who just played for Louisville and got hurt."
