Kansas State’s Frank Martin did not take losing to Baylor well

One of the least enviable jobs in college basketball belongs to the TV reporter assigned to interview fiery Kansas State coach Frank Martin immediately after a loss.

Fox Sports Kansas City's Stan Weber drew the short straw after the 18th-ranked Wildcats fell 75-73 to undefeated Baylor on Tuesday night, and needless to say the conversation was as terse as you'd expect.

The mild-mannered Weber has endured enough of these testy conversations with Martin that he knows better than to take offense to the Kansas State coach's parting jab. Weber ends the interview by telling Martin, "Coach, I appreciate you spending the time," which could more accurately be translated as "Thanks for letting me live through another of these, Frank."

It's a testament to how good Martin believes his team is that he took no solace in pushing the sixth-ranked team in the nation to the final possession. Rodney McGruder scored 30 points and kept Kansas State competitive, but the Wildcats couldn't do enough to overcome 20 turnovers or 12 Baylor offensive rebounds.

Kansas State appeared to be in position to tie the game when Angel Rodriguez beat his man off the dribble and found a wide-open path to the basket in the final five seconds. A.J. Walton saved Baylor, however, he stripped Rodriguez from behind and Quincy Acy tipped away the ensuing inbound pass to preserve the victory.

"For us to be in a place where we're fighting to protect our home court and to not close this game out because of a comedy of plays, it's embarrassing," a still heated Martin said in his postgame news conference.

"The guys wearing our uniforms threw the ball to the guys wearing their uniforms so they can go down and dunk. Hard to play good offense and hard to play defense when you throw the ball to the other team so they can go down and dunk the ball."

What's amazing about Martin's postgame interview with Weber is this was nowhere close to the most memorable on-air exchange they've had. At halftime of a 34-point victory over Alcorn State last season, Weber asked Martin what he planned to tell the team in the locker room.

Deadpanned Martin, "That we're an embarrassment to the game of basketball right now."

What is not mentioned is that Stan is the color man for K-State sports, so he knows Frank well. He knows what to expect, and they have a solid relationship, so this wasn't a case of Frank biting Stan's head off as the writer makes it seem. This is a case of two men affiliated with the same university and one of them venting openly because he is comfortable with the other. Oh, and God bless Frank Martin.

The Missouri win Cats had very low turnover. What Coach Martin he is trying to teach his team is that they needs to play the same every night especially in this league. If I was Baylor I would be worried in Waco when the Cats visit and don't have those turnovers! Cats do well on the road!

        what language was that?

Solid logic....are you kidding? Teams have more turnovers on the road, not to mention Bayor's defense created KSU's turnovers. Hope to see you in Waco.

At least Frank's honest. That's a game we should have won, and to lose was embarrassing.

      Get it together, Coach. Now.

How in the world is he able to recruit players?

Way beyond what I had thought would be a rebuilding year. This is a young team, only Samuels is a senior, and already they have the mark of a tough, Bball team. Yes, they are young and that showed down the stretch. By the end of the season I wouldn't want to have this group or their coach staring me down.

Frank, you need to take a good hard look in the mirror. This loss is more on you than them. Your team is unable to play focused for more than 10 minutes at a time in any game this season. Why is that?

They looked pretty damned focused dismantling my Mizzou team last weekend. I'm not a huge Martin fan, but the man can coach

It's not really coaching. It's an attempt at teaching through humiliation.

Jeff your correct! Martin is looking for mental roughness the whole 40 minutes. Mizzou is very young and they will be good as the season develops.

Gotta say, Frank Martin is a hell of a coach. He demands the most out of his players and is not satisfied with less. Great for K-State program as I've seen it with my own eyes over the years just how bad it's been.

I have been to several K-State events with both Stan and Frank and they have a great respect for each other. Stan does a great job setting up Frank sound bites. I envy Stan for being able to interview Frank during games. As a former K-State quarterback, I guarantee you Stan has no problem with these interviews and enjoys being around such emotion. EMAW!

or maybe he's won of the few people in sports who isn't afraid to answer reporter's/analyst's questions the way everyone really wants to. what's wrong with being honest?

It's called intensity and attention to detail. This is why he has this job. His kids generally respond and improve because of it.

Frank is awesome. He'll have these guys ready to play come tourney. FM offenses always come together at the end of the year because they spend the first half of the season playing defense. Its a good plan.

All coaches hate to lose, but some coaches are able to rise above it and be professional and courteous in the heat of the moment. A person's character is revealed during times like these. I know I'd probably love his "firey attitude" if I was a K-State fan, but as an objective observes he comes across as an immature jackass.

So, what's new? Frank Martin, Ozzie Guillen, every sport has a guy like this. It works for a while, but wears poorly for the long haul.

how could he not stomach them losing? The refs were trying to hand over a W on a silver platter. TO's cost them the game, plain and simple.
