The two-minute cameo appearance Harvard's Kenyatta Smith made against Dartmouth on Sunday was supposed to be the first step toward easing the 6-foot-8 junior back into the Crimson's rotation.

Instead Smith learned a few days later that those two minutes will be the only playing time he'll log all season.

Harvard announced Friday morning that Smith will miss the remainder of the season after breaking a bone in his right foot during practice on Monday afternoon. The broken bone is in the same foot in which Smith suffered a stress reaction and hairline fracture days before Harvard's season opener, forcing him to sit out the Crimson's first 17 games.

Smith's absence deprives Harvard of maybe its top interior scorer. He averaged 5.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.1 blocks last season despite playing just 14.5 minutes per game and delivered back-to-back 10-point performances in the NCAA tournament last March against New Mexico and Arizona.

Since Harvard coach Tommy Amaker hasn't had Smith available all season, the Crimson's rotation won't change without him. They'll still start 6-foot-7 Kyle Casey and Steve Mondou-Missi at both forward spots, with Evan Cummins and Zena Edosomwan among those getting playing time off the bench.

Harvard remains the favorite to win the Ivy League and return to the NCAA tournament even without Smith available down the stretch. The Crimson can't rely on an at-large bid if they don't win the league, however, since they lost their two marquee non-league games against UConn and Colorado and also slipped up against Florida Atlantic earlier this month.
