Georgetown's latest win inspires very enthusiastic radio call

If Gus Johnson is clearly the nation's most excitable college basketball play-by-play announcer on TV, then Georgetown's Rich Chvotkin might be able to lay claim to that title on radio.

The man who has been the voice of Georgetown basketball for well over three decades has turned "Hoyas win" into a signature call, repeating it over and over after the buzzer sounds on a victory. He got excited enough to unleash the catchphrase an incredible 15 straight times after Georgetown held off seventh-ranked Villanova for a 69-66 victory on Saturday.

Listen to Chvotkin's Georgetown-Villanova call here

"One possession game, Fisher top of the circle ... Dumps the ball off to Pena ... Steps back, fires up a three ... Off the rim, no. Rebound controlled by Cheek ... Puts it up ... No basket, No basket. Hoyas win! Hoyas win! Hoyas win! Hoyas win! Hoyas win! Hoyas win! Hoyas win! Hoyas win! Hoyas win! Hoyas win! Hoyas win! Hoyas win! Hoyas win! Hoyas win! Hoyas win! 69-66, Hoyas win!"

If opposing fans find Chvotkin's lack of balance to be irritating, he's a source of comfort to Georgetown fans who have listened to him since the days of Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning and Dikembe Mutumbo. He doesn't apologize for favoring the Hoyas, telling USA Today in 2007 that he believes it adds to his call.

"Broadcasters are supposed to be kind of balanced, but I say if you are doing it on radio you also must get into the emotion of the game," he explains. "You have to scream because it's a great play. Just as long as you don't become inaudible."

Amazingly enough, Chvotkin repeating "Hoyas win!" 15 straight times on Saturday was not a record. A second-round NCAA tournament victory over Vanderbilt during Georgetown's 2007 Final Four run inspired 17 "Hoyas win!" blasts.
