David Stockton's teammates got a chuckle out of the 5-11 guard's monster block

LAS VEGAS --- The surest sign Tuesday was Gonzaga's night came 12 minutes into the first half of the Zags' 75-64 victory over BYU in the WCC title game.

It was then that 5-foot-11 David Stockton recorded a block that would have made Dikembe Mutombo proud.

When BYU guard Anson Winder attacked the rim in transition and attempted a scoop layup, Stockton came over from the weak side and swatted it out of bounds. It was the ninth block of the senior guard's career, and undoubtedly the most powerful.

"I've never seen that before, even in practice," 6-foot-9 Gonzaga forward Sam Dower said. "That was impressive. I don't even think I've had a block like that since I've been here. Especially coming from him. He always talks about blocks, and he's been waiting for one like this for a while."

Gonzaga coach Mark Few was less enthusiastic about Stockton morphing into a rim protector.

"I don't think we need to be encouraging him," Few joked wryly. "We need our 5-6 guys to strip guys and to take charges."
