Danny Manning, who won national championships with Kansas as both a player and assistant coach, has been hired by Wake Forest University as its new head coach, according to the AP. The school has not yet formally announced the hiring.

Manning, best known as a Kansas Jayhawk, also boasts 15 years of pro experience on his resume, including two All-Star berths. He attended high school in Greensboro, North Carolina, not far from Wake Forest. In his first stint as a head coach, he led Tulsa to postseason play in both of the last two years, including an NCAA berth this year.

Manning replaces Jeff Bzdelik, who resigned last month. Bzdelik coached four seasons at Wake and only achieved one winning season, this year's 17-16 mark. Wake Forest students celebrated Bzdelik's departure by festooning the trees in the school's quad with toilet paper.

This, then, is the challenge that awaits Manning: make sure the trees at Wake get decorated for his successes, not his failures.
