In case you hadn’t heard, Bill Russell was pretty good at basketball
One of the debates that always emerges regarding great players of past eras is whether they would be as dominant in today's game. Judging from this clip of Bill Russell that surfaced Monday on YouTube, it's safe to say he'd probably do alright. According to the uploader of the clip, the footage is from 1956 when Russell averaged 20.7 points and 20.3 rebounds and led the University of San Francisco to its second of two straight national championships. The 6-foot-9 big man grabs a rebound, goes coast-to-coast at Tyus Edney speed and showcases the leaping ability that made him one of the nation's best high jumpers at the time, leaping over a ducking defender to convert a layup. It's a play that would leave just as many mouths agape now as it did 57 years ago. The only difference is Russell no doubt would have finished with a dunk instead of a layup.
