Breakfast Buffet: Greivis Vasquez takes one last jab at ACC foe

1. Even at a ceremony to retire his jersey during Maryland's victory over NC State on Sunday afternoon, former Terps star Greivis Vasquez managed to antagonize an old ACC rival. Asked about Maryland's fading NCAA tournament hopes, Vasquez said he's confident the Terps can win the rest of their games, adding, "I think we can beat UNC at UNC anytime."

2. Why has Ohio State's Aaron Craft made an instant impact as a freshman? It starts with his character. The Akron Beacon Journal offers some terrific anecdotes from Craft's high school days including the time he gave his jersey to a disabled classmate and the time he baked a cake for an elementary student.

3. The second coaching vacancy of the offseason became official this weekend when Stetson announced coach Derek Waugh will resign effective at the end of the season and fulfill the final year of contract as an assistant athletic director. Waugh, now in his 11th season at Stetson, is 7-21 this year and 119-190 overall.

4. As good as Purdue's E'Twaun Moore and Cleveland State's Norris Cole were on Sunday, Cal's Jorge Gutierrez might have been even a notch better. Gutierrez scored nine of his career-high 34 points in overtime and assisted on Brandon Smith's game-sealing 3-pointer, propelling Cal to a 76-72 victory over UCLA.

5. The already thin Virginia Tech roster may lose another player. The Washington Post reports that reserve wing Jarell Eddie was charged last Tuesday for possession of marijuana, the same day as the freshman logged seven minutes in a victory over Maryland.

The most heart-wrenching result of the weekend had to be UNC Asheville's 83-82 loss to Northeastern. UNC Asheville's Chris Stephenson had already celebrated sinking the game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer to send Saturday's game to overtime when the referees reviewed the play and ruled his foot was on the line, giving Northeastern the one-point win.

"E'Twaun, he may put his fingers up and tell you he hit a 3-pointer, but he rarely smiles. Once he smiles, he's in a zone, and you probably won't stop him that night." -- Purdue's Lewis Jackson on teammate E'Twaun Moore scoring 38 points in Sunday's victory over Ohio State. (The Associated Press)
