Competing for the Mountain West Conference title will be significantly tougher for Wyoming now that second-leading scorer Luke Martinez has been suspended indefinitely following his arrest over the weekend for aggravated assault.

Martinez already missed the past three games after breaking a bone in his right hand during a fight Dec. 30 at a Laramie bar called Buckhorn, the Casper Star-Tribune reported. He was expected to be out for an undetermined length of time because of the injury, but now it's uncertain if he will return to the team at all. He has a cast on his right hand.

Wyoming officials said they would not comment on Martinez because his case is an ongoing legal matter.

Martinez has been a big part of the Cowboys fast start this season. Not only is he the team's second-leading scorer at more than 14 points a game, he also leads the team in steals and has been its best 3-point and free throw shooter. He led the Mountain West in made 3-pointers per game last season as a junior.

No charges were filed against Martinez immediately following the incident but after further interviews with witnesses, police chose to charge Martinez on Sunday, the Star-Tribune reported. Martinez had traveled with the Cowboys to Nevada for Saturday's game. Police told the paper that Martinez has been cooperative with the investigation since the night of the incident.

The Cowboys are 14-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Three of their next five games are at home, but two of those contests are against nationally ranked teams San Diego State and New Mexico
