Statistics are for losers as the old saying goes, but sometimes the statistics are just too good, bad or ugly to ignore. There was a little of all three in Southern Mississippi's 102-46 victory over Marshall.

Yes, that's the same Marshall team many thought was the second best team in Conference USA back in the fall, trailing Memphis. Southern Miss has clearly established itself in that role instead. The Thundering Herd not only lost by 56 points Wednesday, but fell one game below .500 doing so.

There is no better place to start than the start. Southern Miss went on a 47-4 run in the first half that obviously decided the game.

  • During a stretch from roughly the 16-minute mark until the 6-minute mark, Southern Miss held Marshall to four points and scored 37.
  • Marshall committed 31 turnovers in the game
  • The Thundering Herd made just 13 of 33 free throw attempts. That's .394 at the free throw line.
  • Southern Miss made 20 steals and had 25 assists.
  • The Golden Eagles knocked down 11 of 20 3-pointers, most of which came in the first half. They weren't trying to run up the score late.

It was the eighth consecutive victory for Southern Miss, which improved to 16-4 and 5-0 in league play. The Golden Eagles will play Memphis twice in the span of two weeks in mid-February and those games could be interesting if both teams continue winning in the meantime and remain undefeated in the conference.

Marshall will get a chance to redeem itself on its home floor against Southern Miss on March 5.
