Kentucky smothers Florida, cements itself as national title favorite

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Anthony Davis defend Jacob KurtzSyracuse has the stronger resume. Ohio State and North Carolina have more experience. Murray State is the lone unbeaten.

But there can be little doubt after top-ranked Kentucky obliterated No. 8 Florida 78-58 on Tuesday night that the Wildcats have entrenched themselves as the national title favorite.

[Pat Forde: Another case for Kentucky Wildcats as nation's best college hoops team]

If Tuesday's matchup with Florida was a litmus test for Kentucky after a month of beating up on second-tier SEC teams, then the Wildcats proved they're ready for a back-loaded second half of league play. They used their length and athleticism to smother a Gators team that had won seven in a row entering the game, building a 12-point halftime lead and never letting Florida back within single digits after the opening minute of the second half.

Whereas Florida could have tied Kentucky in the loss column with a victory at Rupp Arena, the Wildcats (24-1, 10-0) now have a 2.5 game lead on the Gators and a four-game cushion on Vanderbilt and Mississippi State. About all Kentucky has left to prove in SEC play is that it can defeat the league's better teams on the road, something the Wildcats will have the chance to do Saturday at Vanderbilt and later at Mississippi State and Florida.

What suggests Kentucky could win all those games is the intimidating defense it showcased once again Tuesday night.

Determined to prevent three-point happy Florida from getting any open perimeter looks, Kentucky crowded the Gators at the three-point line and dared them to take them off the dribble. It was a sound strategy since the Wildcats have the length on the perimeter to bother Florida's shooters and the nation's best shot blocker in Anthony Davis to alter shots around the rim.

Besides occasional flashes from guards Kenny Boynton and Bradley Beal, the Gators never looked comfortable against Kentucky. They sank just 35 percent of their shots from the field, hit just 6 of 27 from three-point range and had four shots blocked and numerous more altered by Davis' enormous wingspan.

Florida's inability to score consistently prevented it from utilizing full-court pressure, which was one of the few ways the Gators had any success. All the long rebounds from Florida's missed three-pointers also fueled the Wildcats' transition attack, contributing to Kentucky's 52.7 percent shooting.

Doron Lamb led Kentucky with 18 points and 4 of 5 three-point shooting. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist chipped in 13 points and 13 rebounds. But the biggest game-changer was Davis, who may have overtaken Kansas' Thomas Robinson in the national player of the year race by dominating with his defense while also scoring 16 points on an array of alley-oop dunks and pick-and-roll-generated layups.

When Kentucky coach John Calipari spoke to ESPN just after the final buzzer, he explained that a 20-point victory wasn't what pleased him most.

"Our thing is, 'Are we getting better?'" Calipari said "That's all I want to know."

Clearly, the answer is yes. For Kentucky fans longing for another national championship, that's great news. For the rest of college basketball, that's downright scary.

I'm no particular UK fan--I just like college hoops--but I will say that the UK team played more like just that--a team--last night that in any other game this season. There are other good teams out there but if the Wildcats keep playing like this into March, I don't see anyone beating them. They simply have too much talent. And when all that talent starts appreciating each other like they did against Florida, (teamwork) they're going to be unbeatable. "One and dones" or not.

How does Syracuse have the stronger resume? Kentucky has beaten Louisville, Kansas, UNC, and dominated Florida. Syracuse has beaten Marquette and barely squeaked past Florida. Kentucky's loss is also against a much better team than Syracuse's loss. There is absolutely no objective way to argue that Syracuse's resume is better. Big East homer journalism at its worst, even when you have to admit a non-Big East team is the runaway favorite, you still get your digs in.

Oh, and OSU and UNC have more experience? Sorry but we returned as many players as either team, and our returnees are coming off a season in which they defeated BOTH OSU and UNC on their way to a Final Four. Unbelievable.

Lets not forget that Syracuse needed the refs to beat WVU. To this day, Syracuse played two ranked teams and one of them was a SEC team. As for UNC with more experience, really that is funny

My only guess is they have a stonger resume in that their SOS is better.

KY proved tonight that they are the surging presence, both in the paint and out, that is on the cusp of being the outright best team in the NCAA this year. Be advised ...to the rest of the field........be afraid.........

Oh, I thought UK was the only basketball team ever to win any game. title, or championship. So, there are actually some other teams out there that they have to play?

Nah. Just like everyone else, Kentucky would have some difficulty matching up with the four guard lineup. Keep it spaced out and the Tigers would be ok. I hope they get to match up with Kentucky. Because that game likely wouldn't be until the final four or championship.
      • Evan H 3 months ago
very true, we would have quickness over them in the transition game, but davis would make it hell for them on the dribble penetration
      • Truthnotinyou 3 months ago
@Evan H - Your comment about "Davis" is the straight-up truth. He would be "hell" indeed!

This Coach Cal's BEST UK team. They just pimp slapped UF 2night. And they have not played their best ball yet. Go, Cats!!!
      • The Veldt 3 months ago
Statistically that was their "best ball" of the ENTIRE season. How many more times are they going to shoot 60% from the 3 and 100% from the free throw line? Answer: Never.

They will hit a road block when they aren't hitting once in a season shots. Bank it!

The next time Coach Cal wins a championship will be the first time. The next time Coach Cal wins with a clean program will be never.

GO BIG BLUE! It is great to have the author say "For Kentucky fans longing for another national championship, that's great news. For the rest of college basketball, that's downright scary." That is the way we want it. Also, stop all the hate!

Really, Peoria? UConn? Battle tested? You mean, UConn, the on-probation-for-years-of-academic-underperformance team that shouldn't have been in the 2011 NCAA tourney in the first place? UConn, the team currently petitioning the NCAA for permission to "punish themselves" so they can reverse the NCAA's original ban from 2013 March Madness? Or do you mean, UConn, the currently 15-8 team that just got a 20-pt ash kicking from Louisville?

well traveled, who's to say they've peaked yet. as cal said "are we getting better?" if the answer is yes, then they obviously haven't peaked yet. since by definition, once you've peaked there's no where to go but down. if this team hasn't peaked yet, which i don't think they have, it's scary. which may have been the overall point of the article

The one thing that bothers me about KY is all these articles. When they start beleiving their own press that has spelled trouble for many years. Some one should keep them away from tvs, radios and news papers. Go Cats

Kentucky is playing like a championships team alright, and I'm a Wildcat fan, but I also know that the NCAA tournament is a different setting and if your not focus you can be upset. I don't look for this to happen, but you must admit it is a different mind set and good, powerful team have been ousted in first and second rounds many times. Its not about who is #1 now, but who is left standing, and cutting down the nets at the tournment championship game.... GO CATS !!!!!
    • give me a break  •  Live Oak, Florida  •  3 months ago
Right now KY has earned the #1 rating. They are playing great ball. But you have to remember that it only takes one team to beat you in the NCAA Tourney and you are out. IU, beat KY amd Ohio St. Fl St beast NC and Duke. Any team can win when they are p;aying like a team. Going to be a good tourney.

Anyone else concerned that Davis has no offensive moves on the low block? He needs some lessons from Boogie.
    • abe_froman  •  3 months ago
We'll see if they're still the favorite when they play somebody tough on the road and win.
    • The Veldt  •  3 months ago
Florida had a fluke of an extremely bad shooting night. They average 40% from the 3 point line and they only shot 22% (they hit 50% against Ohio State) while Kentucky hit 60% (they average 38%) which is amazing by any standards.

You could attribute the bad 3 point percentage to great defense but, come on, I watched the game and Florida was just missing barely contested to uncontested shots. A perfect 100% from the free throw line (something that is the most rare occurrence in college bball - UK avg. 72%) also helped Kentucky's cause.

Basically, the stars aligned for Kentucky to have this blow out win, miss some free throws, knock that 60% three point stat down to their average and it's a game much like Syracuse and Ohio State.

I can't wait to see what happens when the Wildcats go to Florida. I have a feeling it will be a much different game.

The truth is in the stats.
