John Henson’s needless last-second dunk draws Maryland’s ire

It won't be hard for Maryland coach Mark Turgeon to motivate his players entering their Feb. 29 rematch with North Carolina.

All Turgeon will have to do is show the Terps the video of North Carolina's John Henson throwing down a needless dunk with one second remaining in the Tar Heels' 83-74 win on Saturday evening. Boos rained down on Henson from the Comcast Center crowd and Maryland players and coaches said afterward they thought the junior forward should have dribbled out the clock.

"I didn't like the dunk," Turgeon told the Baltimore Sun . "[Roy Williams] knows that."

Added Maryland star Terrell Stoglin, "I felt it was a bad play, personally."

If the emphatic dunk was Henson's answer to those who have criticized North Carolina's lack of a mean streak this season, then it was still the wrong means of doing it. Even after a hard-fought come-from-behind road win during which the opposing crowd had no doubt been heckling him since the opening tipoff, the sportsmanlike move from Henson would certainly have been to dribble the clock out.

Henson didn't apologize for the dunk when asked about it after the game, telling reporters he was pleased to finally get one after being denied by Maryland big man Alex Len earlier.

"I don't know if I initially wanted to dunk," Henson told North Carolina's student paper. "But instinct — he's running at me and I'm under the basket and it just kind of kicked in. That's how it happened.

"I'm happy with the decision. He'd been blocking my shot all night, and it's good to get at least one shot on him."

Why was this article even written? Let's interview all 20 teams we beat this year and find out what they didn't like about our wins. Is Jeff trying to be the new Chris Chase? Ridiculous...

Is that not part of the game. I see coaches that have their team still fould with only seconds left on the clock when there losing by double digits. That is worse than this. Get over it.

Should Henson maybe have eaten the ball? OK, maybe. But why all the whining out of College Park of late? First Lefty Driesell whines about the court being named after Gary Williams, instead of for instance Len Bias (which may have had the added benefit of generating naming rights funds from Coke) . . . or perhaps, by unstated implication, the Old Lefthander himself. Now this about a meaningless additional two points, which, if it was so meaningless, then why are they assigning so much meaning to it?

Hey, back in '08, when Gerald Henderson broke Tyler Hansbrough's nose in the closing seconds of a game Duke had alreadly lost, THAT was something to get upset about. But THIS? Grow up. It's just a game, folks.

Oh no!!! The fragile psyches of the Terps have been crushed. They have been DISRESPECTED, the most horrible crime of the century. Maybe next time they will play a little something I like to call "defense".

if maryland wasn't pressuring the ball and trapping unc could have dribbled out the clock. but if a team plays pressure defense at the end of the game, you can't expect the team ahead to just turn the ball over to them.

len elmore should not be allowed to do anymore maryland games. he was crying all game about maryland not even being worthy of being in the same gym as UNC. what is that all about? Maryland has an ok team and you expect them to be tough at home. then after the dunk elmore says "you can have your demonstration carolina but we put you through a dogfight today." he didn't even observe the trapping defense maryland was running until the game was over.

i sure don't blame maryland for continuing to play up to the end, but why accuse henson of lack of sportsmanship when UNC keeps playing too? and can someone get some inferiority complex counseling for len elmore?

Man people are sensitive these days. If I'm the MD defender and I've got a problem with it, I'm fouling him... HARD.

      Otherwise just shut up.

If you don't want him to dunk it, stop him. Otherwise, shut your yapper and play better.

So John's defender can come to foul but he can not dunk? That makes loads of sense. If you are still going to play defense then the other team can run offense.

Maryland was continuing to play. They were pressuring the ball, trying to foul. So dont get upset when Carolina continues to play too. If you dont want the other team to try and score, dont try to foul them or rip the ball out.

Easy enough problem to solve. Next time you play them, make sure you're ahead by four or more points when the clock reaches that point.

Sports fans and in particular losing ones are very fickle. They shout with glee when in the heat of a game a player completes a "statement making dunk." Yet since this particular flush by Tar Heel John Henson took place toward the end of a losing effort by Maryland Terps all the gentlemen sportsmen cry foul. Grow up, man up, and put on your big boy pants and take your loss. Learn from the experience and stop whining like wimp. The very essence of the sport emanates from being competitive, so compete and stop your crying.
