Double trouble: Otto Porter Jr. and Georgetown continue surge toward possible No. 1 seed
Not every team that earns a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament has a Player of the Year candidate and not every player up for that honor plays for a team in the national title hunt. It's looking increasingly likely that Georgetown might have both elements in play when March Madness arrives.
Otto Porter Jr. added to his Player of the Year resume by scoring 21 of his 22 points after halftime, including the game-winning basket in double overtime to lead the Hoyas to a 79-78 road win at Connecticut.
Porter made a layup with 9.5 seconds left completing a late comeback from an earlier seven-point deficit in the second overtime. The Hoyas had led by 12 points with 41/2 minutes remaining in regulation but gave up the lead. Georgetown has been a resilient team all season and it regrouped and found a way to win its 10th straight improving to 22-4 overall and 12-3 in the Big East.
The Hoyas only head-scratching loss came at South Florida in mid-January, but they haven't lost since playing in one of the most difficult leagues in the country. The other losses came to Indiana, Marquette and Pittsburgh. Georgetown also has wins over five ranked teams and is one of the best defensive teams in the nation.
With teams like Florida and Michigan struggling at the same time Georgetown is surging, the Hoyas are definitely trending toward a top-seed. The attention Porter is receiving for his play will only help their cause.
