Coach K dissatisfied with Duke’s leadership

    Andre Dawkins (AP)

In addition to the lack of a true point guard to facilitate the offense and an inability to stop opposing guards off the dribble, Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski identified another weakness of this year's Blue Devils.

Krzyzewski apparently doesn't see the same level of leadership he has witnessed in past years when Duke had seniors Kyle Singler and Nolan Smith last season or Jon Scheyer, Brian Zoubek and Lance Thomas the one before that.

"The last two years, we haven't lost that many, but those teams were very mature," Krzyzewski  said Monday on the David Glenn Show. "With Scheyer and Singler and Smith and Lance and Brian, we had older, very dependable guys. You knew what to expect. This year's team is a team that doesn't have those guys.

"One of the best ways of communication is if someone on your team is communicating your message. That's what Singler did on a daily basis through his effort or Nolan Smith through his effort and talk. Or Scheyer, Lance and Brian. They did that as big brothers. That's something we're missing on this team. Not being negative about our team, but we just do not have that. As a result, the message you're trying to get across may not be getting as deep as it needs to be."

What prompted Krzyzewski to go public with his dissatisfaction with the leadership on his team was a 78-74 overtime home loss to Miami on Sunday in which Duke displayed little effort or intensity for long stretches of the first half. The Blue Devils (19-4, 6-2) rallied from a 14-point halftime deficit to force overtime but missed all six of their free throws in the extra period and fell at home for the second time this season.

Whereas past Duke teams boasted the talent and depth to survive a rare complacent patch, this year's Devils don't seem to have either to the same degree.

They're ninth in the ACC in points per possession defense. They've yet to settle on a consistent starting lineup or rotation. And they lack a point guard who can create for others off the dribble, enabling opposing teams to crowd the three-point arc and dare the Plumlee brothers to beat them inside.

Those flaws haven't prevented Duke from winning 19 games and contending for an ACC championship, but they do make the Blue Devils' margin for error slimmer.

"We're two possessions away from being undefeated in the conference, but we're also two other possessions away from maybe being 4-4," Krzyzewski said. "We drive on a more narrow road to win or lose than the Duke team's of the past three years. We've known that from the beginning. It's our goal to try to widen the road. You do that by getting maturity, execution and always playing hard. Yesterday, I didn't think we played hard for parts of that game."

Lack of leadership? Sound like Coach K trying to shift a bit of blame?

With this particular group, even playing 8 on 5, as they always do, won't be enough. Their only talented player is a black hole (it's not a racist reference). Coach K's basic complaint is that if they're not cheating -- i.e., hacking constantly and flopping at every opportunity -- they're not trying hard enough. That's been the formula for their success for over 20 years. It will never change. NBA benches are filled with overhyped Duke "stars" who found that it's not so easy playing 5 on 5. What amazes me is how often NBA scouts have been duped by claims of their greatness from ESPN and other media shills. I do believe that's coming to an end. I don't think NBA scouts are "drooling" over the Plumlees skillsets, as one Yahoo writer said of Kyle Slingler. Aside form the one and dones, like Irving and Rivers, Coach K hasn't "developed" much NBA talent. Basically, if they're mediocre when they arrive, they leave there mediocre.

Well said, but I don't about it coming to an end as long as stern is there. I personally think htere is some kind of deal with the nba to take some of coach k players since he coaced the olympic. too many duke palyers who should not be in the nba.

he is right, we are lacking a lot of leadership, miles and mason plumlee, seth curry, kelly, and dawkins need to step up and take charge
      • serf_tide 3 months ago
Honestly, I think he wants Austin to take over the team. Everything is pointing in that direction. Dawkins has shown he is best as a roll player...Kelly also. Plumlee, Curry and Rivers are the focal point of these comments.

yeah he probably wants austin to take over but also the upperclassmen need to step up in terms of leadership and keeping austin from going to a 1 man show

How about if Krzyzewski steps up and coaches?

How did Duke win without winning?
    • abe_froman  •  3 months ago
But Dick Vitale has been telling me for 15 years that Coach K is the greatest leader of men ever put on planet Earth, if Duke has no leader, does that mean the king is dead?
      • Luke 3 months ago
He means a leader on the court.....

you will never hear coach k take any blame for a loss, he is a pathetic leader as a coach, if he has talent he is like any other coach, just like when he was out a few years ago, he filed a claim to the ncaa to have the losses took off his record, yea duke fans try to forget that cowardly act by there great coach, if he is winning he is all smiles and eating it up, bla bla bla, but when his team loses its nothing he has done wrong, leadership starts at the top, i have always said he is a great recruiter but when it comes to coaching in a close game he is not the man you want on the sideline, he chokes up, if he cant win by 15 or 20 then he is just a average coach, kinda reminds me of joe b hall at kentucky, he had more talent every year then most, but always managed to lose the big games, lets face it how many games have you seen coach k win by having to gut out some calls in the end of a game? and you will never hear him take any credit for a loss, he can pat his back with both hands, he is a great recruiter ill give him that, but with the talent they have had they should have a lot more banners hanging in there gym, i use to like coach k till he skipped out on his players a few years ago, and filed for the ncaa to take the loses off his record, said a lot about the man, he is a poor leader, a good leader will go down with the team, but not coach k,

Still mad about that Laettner shot I see Kentucky! That's one big play he didn't choke up. May have been the greatest play ever in the greatest college basketball game ever!

Gotta love ignorant Carolina fans I don't see old Roy Williams out coaching any teams. Umm wonder why cause he is a loser.

The officials did their part by calling two blocking fouls on Miami away from the ball at the end of regulation... but that didn't even help.

Coach Rat-fink and his coaching never fails -- players only fail Coach Rat-fink and his coaching.
    • scott  •  Fayetteville, North Carolina  •  3 months ago
maybe its because coach k can't draw up a play in the paint, its always try to get free for a three

The guards are smaller than other ACC guards. They have to attack the goal more. Honestly, I like the fact that the team is being challenged. This is the way you get better...rather than eaking out wins in these games. In the Miami game, Duke was outplayed and Miami barely pulled it out. FSU game was a wash. We'll see on Wednesday. Hopefully Coach K will let the guards play with reckless abandon.

you never will hear coach k take any credit for a loss, just like a few years ago when coach k was out for a while he filed for the ncaa to take the loses off his record, thats pretty pathetic for a so called great leader, leadership starts at the top, coach k is a good recruiter but he sucks in a close game, if he cant win by 15 or 20 points he is lost, as much talent as duke has had down the years they shoud have a lot more banners then they do, but its not coach k fault is it, in a close game he is not the man you want on the sidelines , joe b hall was the same way when he coached kentucky, had all that talent year in and year out and only managaed one title, coach k has been at duke for what seems like 40 years and for what he has had to work with not done much better, and he has proved more then once he will bail on his team in a new york min, leadership starts with the coach, coach k can do good when he has 3 or 4 nba players out there doing what they want, but when it comes to having to coach he is just a average coach at best, and i still think it sucks the way he done his team a few years ago, i lost all respect for him then,

Murray State has leadership. How does it feel to get passed by the Racers in both polls? I like it!
    • C.F.  •  Indianapolis, Indiana  •  3 months ago
I question Coach K's remarks about leadership. He's blaming players, but isn't he the leader?
    • Reggid R  •  3 months ago
He's right -- leadership is lacking. And where does that leadership ultimately start and end? With Coach Rat-fink himself. But hey, why should Coach Rat-fink shoulder the responsibility when he can just throw some players under the bus instead?

It's not the end of the world. They're not going to win them all, there's about 200 teams out there that wish they where 19-4. A team like Duke doesn't stay down too long.

Curry is only there because hes riding on his Dads and his brothers coatails. Curry does have a 3 point shot ( sometimes) but can he post up?...Under the basket?? I think not. Duke has no one that can post up. They are quick outside the paint but inside , the other teams have ALL the advantage..... Coach needs to stop trying to get big name players and concentrait on GOOD players ...Not just in name...

austin rivers is an overrated ball hog jacker who can't even dominate the mediocre acc. how many times will he drive the lane and get it stripped before he realizes that he's not hustling 5'5 midgets white boys like he did in high school in orlando. oh wait, they played a national schedule. His attitude is even worse. start cook for dematha.

The only leadership problem Duke has is Krzyzewski.
