Cal State Fullerton women’s assistant coach and fiancé shot to death in parked car
Grief swept over the Cal State Fullerton campus Monday after Monica Quan, an assistant coach for the women's basketball team, and her fiancé, Keith Lawrence, were found shot to death Sunday in a car at the condominium complex where they lived.
Shock and grief were also felt at USC where Lawrence was hired in August as a Department of Public Safety officer after graduating from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Academy. The couple recently became engaged. Both played college basketball at Concordia University in Irvine, Calif., where they met. Quan graduated in 2007.
No arrests had been made and police were still searching for suspects Monday evening in what they characterized as a double homicide. The president, athletic director and Cal State Fullerton head coach Marcia Foster spoke about losing Quan at a press conference earlier in the day.
"I'm sorry that we are gathered here today for news like this,” Foster said. “There are really no words to convey the sadness that our program feels, that the young women who have had the priviledge of working with such a bright and passionate woman.”
Quan, 28, was in her fourth season as a college coach and her second with the Titans. She previously coached two seasons as an assistant at Cal Lutheran University. As a player and student, she spent her first two years of college at Long Beach State before transferring to Concordia. She is a member of her high school's Hall of Fame.
"We just shared a moment of incredible joy with Monica on her recent engagement...” Foster said. “Here's what I want to tell you, I want to tell you that a really bright light was put out way too soon. Somebody, whose passion was impacting young women through the game of basketball, has been taken away from us in a very unfortunate situation."
Cal State Fullerton is 7-14 overall and 3-6 in the Big West Conference this season. The Titans are scheduled to host UC Riverside on Saturday.
