Cal’s Justin Cobbs botches wide-open layup in amusing fashion

Two missed shots will probably haunt Cal guard Justin Cobbs as he reflects on his team's 89-78 overtime loss to Arizona State on Wednesday night.

The first is the contested 16-foot jump shot he missed that would have won the game for Cal at the end of regulation. The second is the uncontested transition layup he botched in a manner few had ever seen before.

With Cal trailing by 13 points two minutes into the second half, Cobbs poked the ball away from Arizona State's Jahii Carson, corralled the ball and zoomed up court for what appeared to be an easy layup. Somehow, Cobbs mistimed his jump and wedged the ball between the backboard and the rim.

Laughing about the play afterward probably would have been easier for Cobbs had it not cost the Bears two points they certainly needed. The possession arrow favored the Bears but Cobbs missed a jump shot and it ended up resulting in a wasted possession.

Don't blame Cobbs too much for Cal's loss, however, because he was the player who willed the Bears back from an 18-point deficit in the first place. He scored 21 points, dished out three assists and tallied three steals, but Cal (14-7, 5-3) still fell for the third straight time after starting Pac-12 play with five consecutive wins.

Cobbs' performance would have been enough had Jermaine Marshall not nailed a game-tying 3-pointer with 17 seconds left in regulation. Carson then went on to score 11 of his game-high 29 points in overtime to lift the Sun Devils (16-5, 5-3) to a third straight victory, one that gives them a chance to complete the first half of Pac-12 play with a 6-3 record should they win at Stanford on Saturday.
