Breakfast Buffet: Is Bruce Weber’s job in jeopardy?

    Bruce Weber (Getty Images)

    1. Based on what Illinois athletic director Mike Thomas told the Chicago Tribune even before the Illini's loss to Michigan on Sunday, it appears coach Bruce Weber may not keep his job much longer. "It's our goal to be relevant through Big Ten play," Thomas said. "It's not a question of being in the tournament. That should be a given. It should be what seed." Illinois, now 16-9, 5-7, is in danger of missing the NCAA tournament for the second time in three years.

    2. How did Memphis gain entry into the Big East last week after years of failed overtures? The Memphis Commercial Appeal's Kyle Veazey takes readers behind the scenes to provide the answer. Though Memphis had lobbied for more than a decade for inclusion in the league, the advanced talks that led to last week's announcement only took place over the course of three weeks.

    3. Unhappy with sitting on the bench for a key second-half stretch in Maryland's loss to Duke on Saturday, guard Terrell Stoglin vented his frustration on Twitter afterward. "Loved sitting that bench today. Smfh wow," Stoglin wrote. It's understandable for Stoglin to be upset, but the leading scorer on a team already reeling from Pe'Shon Howard's season-ending knee injury needs to show more restraint and maturity than that.

    4. Criticizing Gus Johnson is practically blasphemy in college basketball circles, but New York Magazine's Will Leitch makes some valid points. Leitch writes that viewer's anticipation of Johnson's signature excitable game-ending calls often overshadows the fact that he's a mediocre play-by-play man for the majority of the game. I'll admit Leitch is probably right about that, but there's no one I'd rather have behind the microphone for the final minute of a closely contested game.

    5. Baylor's fourth loss in four games against fellow Big 12 powers Missouri and Kansas this season inspired SI.com's Andy Glockner to examine what exactly is wrong with the super talented yet seemingly underachieving Bears. Although Perry Jones III's vanishing act and the team's lack of a distributing point guard are factors, Glockner points to Scott Drew's tissue-soft two-three zone as the primary factor.

Since video of Wild Bill's latest costume wasn't available, I decided to break the rules and make this a pic of the day instead of a clip of the day. The portly Utah State super fan has previously dressed up as Cupid, Peter Pan and the Teacup from Beauty and the Beast, among other things. In this case, he donned green body paint from head-to-toe to dress as a pig from "Angry Birds" during Saturday's Utah State loss to New Mexico. (Thanks to @bubbaprog for the photo)

"Who cares if Princeton beat Harvard? It's a press conference about Penn and Dartmouth. We just sat here for two hours and watched the Penn-Dartmouth game. You should have driven up I-95 and gone to Princeton." — Penn coach Jerome Allen after his team's narrow win over Dartmouth Saturday. With Harvard's loss to Princeton, the Quakers once again control their own destiny in the Ivy League title race (Philadelphia Enquirer)

It is time to end the Bruce Weber era at Illinois. His teams continue to shoot an incredible number of three point attempts despite a poor percentage of success. He has an ultra talented big man who he uses to set screens twenty feet away from the basket and can't seem to adjust his offensive sets to get the guy plenty of shots. It is the coach's job to find and make these types of adjustments. Coach Weber has failed in that regard. He negatively and publicly calls out individual players in the press which goes against the best practices of public praise and private rebuke and it is time to send him packing..
      • Ryan 3 months ago
I agree with everything you said except that Leonard is an "ultra talented big man." Is he a good athlete for a guy his size? Yes, he is. But he is not ultra-talented and he will be a bust for sure in the NBA. I don't see any kind of a post game from him outside of shooting a little jump hook. I've seen plenty of undersized guys prevent him scoring. I mean, 6-8 toothpick John Shurna was shutting him down. Some of that might be on Weber but some of it has to fall on Leonard too...It will be a joke if he goes to the NBA. He will have to sit on the bench for at least 2 or 3years before he can contribute anything. And I question if he will ever be any kind of impact player in the pros...

Ryan, he may not end up being a dominant pro. I certainly agree with your analysis if he leaves after this year. Another season of the same type of year to year progress would benefit him tremendously. He did, however, play Sullinger extremely well in the OSU win. If you watch the tactics teams use against him it is usually to rough him up and give whomever is guarding him plenty of help. Hence, my comments on the coaching staff failing to use back picks along the baseline or some other means to get him open. I just don't see the type of adjustments to talent that a top notch coach should make. The alternative is to consistently recruit a top 10 class where talent may overshadow the need for such adjustments.

I like Bruce and I know he's a good coach, but I would like to see a change. With as much talent there is in just the Chicagoland area, there is no reason why Illinois can't be an elite team each year. (The same could be said for football too).
      • Scott 3 months ago
That has been the argument about Illinois for years but the truth is Chicago area football is not all that great. Illinois high school football is not even close to being an elite state despite the population. On the other hand basketball is much stronger but the city of Chicago supplies not only Illinois with players but also other major Universities including University of Iowa, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Northwestern University, and DePaul University. I have never known a single coach in the history of Illinois basketball that was able to dominate the state when it comes to recruiting.
      • robertw 3 months ago
Scott has some great points. Somehow if Illini could find an elite basketball coach who would stay with the program, they could then dominate Chicagoland recruiting. Of course, that is a big "If" and it's going to be expensive to hire a top talent.

      Go home Weber......
    • golfingarmy1  •  Rochester, New York  •  3 months ago
I think Weber needs to go wherever Zook goes. Illinois is an underachieving team and they are about to lose their center to the NBA.

After he was successful with Bill Self recruits the wheels came off. He is not a bad X and O coach but not a good recruiter
      • Tramell W 3 months ago
Not a Ilinois fan..but he has had some extremely bad luck in recruiting..first he lost big fish Eric Gordon after having him in the bag...then he lost Anthony Davis to Kentucky...not easy when you lost your recruits to other schools....at the end of the day Illinois isnt even a great basketball school..they cant compete in recruiting with IU and UK.
      • Ledbetter 3 months ago
Technically IU hasn't been a powerhouse for years until...now..this year? (Win on the road and I think even higher of them). The record against Illinois is .500. They've recruited well recently but, don't rest on those laurels.
    • Bryan  •  Seattle, Washington  •  3 months ago
The sad fact is he is a great assistant coach, and by all indicators a solid human being, but has fallen short as a head coach. His teams show flashes of greatness, but only flashes. They underachieve, and that falls on the coaching staff. That, combined with his sub-par recruiting record in the shadow of Chicago . . . Illinois can do better.

BRUCE WEBER SHOULD BE GONE JUST LIKE RON Z. BEEN TO LONG LONG FOR THIS SCHOOL TO BE UP IN THE STANDINGS AS A GOOD TEAM. JUST MAYBE SOME OF THE PLAYERS NEED A WAKE UP CALL ALSO?
    • Delta vs. Epsilon  •  Union Grove, Wisconsin  •  3 months ago
There won't be many tears in Champaign when Weber is gone... just hope they don't hire another one just like him. Consistently strong hires until Weber.
    • Chris O  •  3 months ago
Agree with Bernard. The three pointers drive me insane every time I watch them. Its one thing if they were making them, but they shoot terrible. Weber, much like Zook, gets great players. He just sucks at making them play well together. They are a very talented team and that's why its so frustrating to watch. Time for a new coach.
      • Ryan 3 months ago
Weber does stink but you are giving him too much credit in recruiting. Illinois gets great players? Am I missing something. How many McDonald's all-americans has Weber recruited to Illinois. Unless I am forgetting someone off the top of my head, the only one I can think of is Richmond. And he was an immature punk that contributed little and then bailed on Illinois. Not exactly the one and done's that you see at the top schools.
      • Chris O 3 months ago
Certainly could get better players no doubt, however you can't tell me that they don't have a very talented team, they just play like crap. There is no reason they shouldn't be in the top three teams in the Big Ten.
      • Bryan 3 months ago
Every year if you take out the "how did you lose that game?" games, and they are a top 20 team. They get top 20 talent, but not top 10 -- which they should in the shadow of Chicago and fervent boosters. But even with top 20 talent they don't get to the top 20 because of stupid losses. And that has to fall on the coach.

Weber is the worst coach in NCAA Hoops history. He is clueless. He won't use a zone, ruins kidsa redshirt seasons and constantly berates his players in the media. He can't coach, recruit or adjust in game.
      • goner 3 months ago
sad thing about this J.O. is that 6 ppl gave you a thumbs down...how pathetic!
      • Doc 3 months ago
I agree it's time for a new coach .one that can adjust to the game they are playing . And teach these players how to deliver the ball to the post .

Spoiled brats! You want to talk worst coach in NCAA history? Look across state borders and see if you still think you have it so bad when you consider what Hoosier fans had to endure with Mike Davis (not all that bad, really, but not great) and Kelvin Sampson. At least you don't have a coach bringing in the NCAA sanctions. I hope all of you spoiled IL whinners get your wish! I think Weber does a good job with the hand he is dealt. IL isn't exactly known as a powerhouse in college hoops year in, year out, even during Lou Henson's era, Knight whipped the Illini on the regular.
    • roonshow  •  3 months ago
I'm tired of Weber's excuses, he needs to go. Unfortunately we might be stuck with him for a few more season thanks to Ron Guenther. Weber's contract runs through 2015.

Put it this way, as an Indiana fan, I hate Bruce Weber just like I hated Gene Keady. That's usually a good thing when opposing fans hate your coach, that means he's doing something right: winning ball games.

He may go but, one problem is that Illinois would have to pay him I think about 5mil and then come up with 5 Mil for the new man. I would wager they would choke down another season in order to save cash..

His job should be in jeopardy...and he likely should have lost it last year or even the year before that...I think he is already gone soon, if you read what the AD said to the media

Sure IL could be much worst this year, but Weber has been running the ship developing(not) players for long enough. The fact that Paul(TOman) or DJ can't play or defend like a point guards by now as juniors is a giant tell. This years team needs a point guard and chemistry lessons and Weber would have kept his job, but the fact he thought a injury prone MVC guard could play at the level needed shows his mindset is all wrong.

this is a very young team remember 2004 it finally kicked in and the kids understood the motion sets and we seen what happened in 2005 give him next year he built this team he cant pass the ball for them into the post but he definetly needs to take the ball out of pauls hand tracy abrams is a talented point gaurd if weber is depending on paul to take him anywhere he is living a pipe dream paul is to talented but he is a slasher not a facilitator he cant even make the simple passes to leonard without turning it over and play griffey more with leonard, bertram, richardson, and abrams
    • Cardfanforlife  •  3 months ago
AD Thomas said it all "It's our job to be relevant through Big Ten play" and "It's not a question of being in the tournament. That should be a given. It should be what seed"

If the AD wants to keep his job, he knows success in football and basketball is critical. Zook and Weber rely on 18 to 21 year olds to keep their jobs. His relys on adults to do what they getting paid for.
    • Cardfanforlife  •  3 months ago
@Travis... support him if you want. Fact is his time has run out. Let your Montana school know he is available. BW will be looking soon, and you'll get him cheep.

coach weber does what he needs to do his players have to listen im all for coaching changes when it calls illinois is not there yet. his record as a head coach is very good, he is the reason siu was reaching the tournament year after year. since he left they have not been competitive. his team is young making young mistakes next year they will be better and the next should be big ten champs. look at michigan state the have had years jits just like this. its called building years. now you need to see results with this class, because this team is very talented. i am willing to give the next two years. if we lose leonard though i dont know. again coach cant keep talent from going pro. lets wait and see.
    • Jarid Taylor  •  Sidney, Illinois  •  3 months ago
I say keep brucel, give him one more year. next year should be alot better and let it play out. If it doesn't improve next year, hes gone. Paul and Richardson will be seniors. Bertrand, leonard, and maniscalco will all be way better. I say one more year.
