Jose Mourinho’s men have only lost one match in all competitions this season, dropping points in an away defeat to Newcastle earlier in December. However they rebounded quickly, winning their next three Premier League games without conceding a goal.

The offseason signings of Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa have worked wonders, as Fabregas leads the league in assists and Costa second in the league in goals. But it is the improvements defensively that Robbie and Kyle believe have made the biggest difference for the Blues.

Nemanja Matic was brought in during the January transfer window last season, and the defensive midfielder has proven he was worth the hefty price tag. His hard tackling and physical presence defensively allow the likes of Fabregas and Willian to focus more on the attacking side of play.

Although John Terry has been at Stamford Bridge since 1998, many would argue his play has been the most surprising. At 34 years of age, the Chelsea skipper is playing some of the best football of his career, stout defensively while also contributing with goals, scoring the match-winner in each of the Blues’ past two matches.

With the title Chelsea’s to lose, the battle for second place looks like it will come down to the two teams from Manchester. City currently sit in second place with a seven point cushion over crosstown rivals Manchester United.

However, Louis van Gaal’s side has been riddled with injuries and have yet to hit their peak, which is a scary thought considering they have won seven of their past eight matches.
