Nick Faldo says Garcia was 'useless' in '08 Ryder Cup

During the opening day Ryder Cup telecast on Golf Channel, analyst and former European team captain Nick Faldo offered some choice words in regard to Sergio Garcia.

A member of his team for Europe’s loss in 2008, Faldo referred to Garcia as “useless” and insisted that he had “a bad attitude.”

Following a day during which he went 0-1-1 alongside Rory McIlroy, Garcia was apprised of these comments and offered some of his own.

“That's unfortunate,” he said with a laugh. “I guess he doesn't feel European. That's the only thing I can think of. You know, there's a lot of things I could say about Nick Faldo, but I'm not going to put myself down to his level.”

Garcia compiled a 0-2-2 record at Valhalla that week.

Graeme McDowell, another member of that 2008 team, also reacted to those comments, bringing up the fact that Garcia and Lee Westwood were benched during the Saturday afternoon session.

“You've got one of the best Ryder Cup pairings of all time being sat down on a Saturday morning of a Ryder Cup that we go on to lose,” McDowell said pointedly. “I'd say Sergio was fairly useless that afternoon, yeah, because he wasn't able to play. So, yeah, I agree.”
