Lou Merloni: Dempster ‘made a lot of fans’ plunking A-Rod

NBC on Yahoo Sports

CSN NE - Ryan Dempster probably made plenty of people in Major League Baseball happy Sunday night by drilling Alex Rodriguez in his first at-bat of the night.

Rodriguez eventually got the best of Dempster -- he got a pair hits, including a home run, off the Red Sox starter in a Yankees' win -- but the plunking of A-Rod is probably all many baseball fans will remember.

Lou Merloni echoed those sentiments on Sports Sunday.

"He made a lot of fans, not just here in Boston, I think around the game of baseball," Merloni said of Dempster. "I didn't have a problem with him drilling Alex Rodriguez. The way he went about it, you know, protocols, unwritten rules, you miss the guy the first time you don't go back. I don't think he tried to hit him with the second, third pitch, but the fourth pitch (was) ball four, he tried to hit him intentionally.

This is a special circumstance," Merloni continued. "And it's not just about that fact that he took steroids. Everybody that has taken steroids has served their suspension. It's everything around Alex Rodriguez, this is even before Biogenesis came out. People didn't like this guy. Now when you hear all this other evidence that they have about him and ratting this guy out and buying the evidence and everything else, everything that surrounds him. His own organization hates him."
