The year was 1963 and the Beatles were top of the charts with “She Loves You” in the UK. That was the last time West Ham won at Anfield and 43 attempts later they had another victory thanks to goals from Manuel Lanzini, Mark Noble (who was sent off late on) and Diafra Sakho on Saturday.

With the win West Ham move up to seventh on six points, while 10-man Liverpool — who had Philippe Coutinho sent off in the second half — suffered their first defeat of the season and are in sixth on seven points.

With less than three minutes on the clock West Ham took the lead as on-loan Argentine attacker Lanzini tapped home at the back post at the Kop end to stun Anfield into silence.

On the half hour mark the Hammers doubled their lead as a mistake from Dejan Lovren at the back let West Ham break and Noble finished coolly for his second goal in as many games. 2-0 to the visitors at Anfield and the Hammers were in dreamland.

In the second half Liverpool were reduced to 10-men as Coutinho lunged into Dmitri Payet and received his second yellow card of the game.

As the final stages played out West Ham almost went 3-0 up through Aaron Cresswell but Mignolet saved well. Then late on Noble was sent off for a lunging tackle on Adam Lallana and the Hammers finished the game with 10-men.

Lovren missed a great chance late in the game to pull one back but West Ham scored late on through Sakho to seal a famous win at Anfield which gives them away wins at Arsenal and Liverpool to open up the season.
