Jay Gruden and Redskins' conundrum: Griffin, Cousins or McCoy?

The Redskins were still celebrating Sunday’s 19-17 victory when Jay Gruden was asked which quarterback he intends to start next Monday night in Dallas.

It’s possible he’ll be choosing from three -- Kirk Cousins, Colt McCoy … and maybe Robert Griffin III.

“You would like to have your decision made as soon as possible,” Gruden said. “Now, you throw Robert into the mix. Robert has a chance to practice on Wednesday and we have to see where he is. See where he is health-wise, and from there I will make a decision from watching the tape of what I’m going to do.”

If Griffin can prove to the medical staff and Gruden that he’s ready to return from the dislocated left ankle he sustained in Week 2, Gruden’s decision would be a rather straightforward one.  He’s already said Griffin will reclaim his No. 1 status when he’s medically cleared.

Griffin worked out on the field prior to Sunday's game, dropping back, eluding an imaginary pass rush, sprinting on bootlegs and firing on-target passes to Gruden’s son, Jack.

If Griffin is not cleared to play Monday, that’s when Gruden will have a potentially tough choice to make: Cousins or McCoy.

McCoy replaced Cousins at the start of the second half against the Titans after Cousins committed his second turnover of the game and 11th this season.

McCoy promptly connected with Pierre Garçon for a 70-yard touchdown. Then, in the final minutes, he directed a 10-play drive that was capped by Kai Forbath’s game winning 22-yard field goal as time expired. McCoy finished the game 11 of 12 for 128 yards, a touchdown, no interceptions and a passer rating of 138.9.

“I thought Kirk did some decent things in the first half,” Gruden said. “Turning the ball over ... we talked accountability, ball security. That was a standard pass play that we’ve run for a long, long time and he threw it right to [the Titans linebacker], unfortunately. [So] I decided to go with Colt in the second half.”

If it comes down to Cousins vs. McCoy, Gruden hinted that he's leaning toward McCoy.

"It's a good sign the way that Colt finished the game, ran the offense," Gruden said. "[It was] very smart and very efficient. [He] did some good things."
