Host Oregon to face Illinois in men's NCAA semis

Aaron Wise won the men’s NCAA individual title on Monday. Tuesday morning in Eugene, Ore., he propelled his team into the semifinals of match play.

Wise, a sophomore, defeated LSU’s Eric Ricard, 3 and 2, to move the host Oregon Ducks past the defending national champions.

Oregon defeated LSU, 3 1/2-1 1/2, with one match tied when the overall outcome was determined.

It proved to be the closest results of the day.

Oregon will face Illinois in the afternoon semifinals at Eugene Country Club. The Fighting Illini defeated South Carolina, 4-1.

The other Final Four matchup will feature Texas against Southern California. Texas routed Big 12 rival Oklahoma, 4-1. Only one of Longhorns' four wins was less than a 4-and-3 result. That came courtesy Beau Hossler's 1-up triumph.

USC rounded out the semifinal qualifiers by knocking off Vanderbilt, 4-1. USC defeated Illinois in the semifinals last year, but lost to LSU in the championship match.

The SEC put three schools into the Elite Eight, but all lost in the quarterfinals.
