  • NHL Playoffs Preview: Can the St. Louis Blues get back on track?

NBC Sports at NBC on Yahoo Sports3 hrs ago

The way a team is playing when it finishes the regular season doesn’t always continue into the playoffs.

Just ask the St. Louis Blues, who finished the 2008-09 campaign on a 9-1-1 streak, only to get swept by Vancouver in the first round.

The Blues are hoping the opposite scenario will occur in 2014, given they enter the postseason on a six-game losing streak in which they’ve been shut out three times and outscored 22-5. That skid cost them first place in the Central Division, and earned them a first-round match-up with the defending champions from Chicago.

Not long ago, St. Louis was the oddsmakers’ favorite to win the Stanley Cup. Today, one has to wonder if the Blues will even win four games this postseason, let alone their first championship in franchise history.

  • NHL Playoff Preview: Can the Blackhawks avoid the Stanley Cup hangover?

NBC Sports at NBC on Yahoo Sports3 hrs ago

The Chicago Blackhawks are the hunted in these Stanley Cup playoffs, which is really no different from their position throughout the regular season.

That’s what happens when you win the silver chalice, hockey’s Holy Grail, the previous season. Not only did they win it all, they enjoyed a record-breaking regular season, too. But that was last year.

Now, the question becomes: Can the Blackhawks avoid the Stanley Cup hangover as they look to defend their championship?

It should help Chicago’s cause that Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane are expected to be ready for when the post-season begins, as the Blackhawks open up against the St. Louis Blues in the first round. This best-of-seven series begins Thursday in St. Louis.

NBC Sports at NBC on Yahoo Sports3 hrs ago

C.J. Edwards isn't taking anything for granted. The Cubs' top pitching prospect doesn't have any grand delusions of being called up to pitch at Wrigley Field next week. He isn't chalking it up as a guarantee that he will make the big leagues or even stick as a starting pitcher. But there is one thing Edwards is sure about: The Cubs will win a pennant in the next couple of seasons. In the Cubs organization, winning is all Edwards knows after helping lead Advanced Class-A Daytona to a championship last season.

  • White Sox don ‘Boston Strong’ shirts pregame vs. Red Sox

NBC Sports at NBC on Yahoo Sports3 hrs ago

With the Red Sox in town to face the White Sox and only one year removed from the Boston Marathon bombing, Chicago sported “Boston Strong” shirt during pregame warm ups.

In an attack that claimed the lives of three people and injured hundreds more, Chicago’s classy gesture paid tribute to those lost and the lives forever changed. It may have just been a t-shirt, but it was a respectful way to honor those affected.

  • Rams’ $100k contest could go very, very wrong for team

NBC Sports at NBC on Yahoo Sports23 hrs ago

Want to win $100,000? Just guess the St. Louis Rams’ entire 2014 season schedule correctly. Seems simple enough, right?

Not so much if you factor in every variable, but Mike Florio is all for the promotional tool to drum up excitement for the upcoming season. “This is a creative twist on the schedule release excitement,” Florio says. “I haven’t calculated the odds … but a lot of factors go into this.”

Florio has one qualm with the contest, however. All it takes is one person with inside information to leak the correct schedule and just that idea alone should keep the Rams feeling uneasy.

  • Donald Trump’s interest in buying Bills more than publicity stunt

NBC Sports at NBC on Yahoo Sports23 hrs ago

Donald Trump’s ploy to become the next owner of the Buffalo Bills may not be such a ploy after all. With his net worth always the subject of inquiry, but it’s no question that it’s a large sum, Mike Florio says he still doesn’t see a transition to Trump happening. “I feel like he’s trying to make an attention-grab, a publicity-grab,” Florio claims. “When it’s time to crunch the numbers, he’s not going to want to pay what it will take.” Regardless of Trump’s misadventures with the USFL and his pompous way of always finding the spotlight, a source close to Mike Florio with an educated idea of the ownership dynamic inthe NFL says other owners would be on board with the move. “It would be very hard [for the NFL] to find nine other owners that would vote against Donald Trump.”
