  • Phil Mickelson's frustration bubbles over in criticism of Tom Watson

NBC Sports at NBC on Yahoo Sports22 hrs ago

GLENEAGLES, Scotland – There are two ways to interpret what happened in the aftermath of the latest United States thrashing at the hands of Europe, the team’s third loss in a row and eighth in the last 10 editions of the event.

One way is that it was a cathartic clearing of the air, a constructive meeting of the minds during which captain Tom Watson publicly defended his management skills and veteran team member Phil Mickelson aired his grievances.

And then there’s the right way.

The reality is, it was an uncomfortable train wreck spilling into an awkward dumpster fire.

It took three full days, but the 40th edition of this event finally turned into a contentious, combative competition by Sunday evening.

Except that it wasn’t the Americans against the Europeans. It was the Americans against themselves.

Second-guessing Ryder Cup captains is as much a part of the gig as pimped out golf carts and awkward speeches, but the scrutiny that is sure to descend on Tom Watson after Day 1 at Gleneagles comes with a healthy dollop of cosmic irony.

Consider that two years ago Davis Love III, the man who shouldered a disproportionate amount of the blame at Medinah, was blasted for sitting the juggernaut of Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley for Saturday’s fourball session.

On Friday, Watson came under fire for letting the high-profile duo play in the afternoon matches.

During the opening day Ryder Cup telecast on Golf Channel, analyst and former European team captain Nick Faldo offered some choice words in regard to Sergio Garcia.

A member of his team for Europe’s loss in 2008, Faldo referred to Garcia as “useless” and insisted that he had “a bad attitude.”

Following a day during which he went 0-1-1 alongside Rory McIlroy, Garcia was apprised of these comments and offered some of his own.

“That's unfortunate,” he said with a laugh. “I guess he doesn't feel European. That's the only thing I can think of. You know, there's a lot of things I could say about Nick Faldo, but I'm not going to put myself down to his level.”

Garcia compiled a 0-2-2 record at Valhalla that week.

  • Ryder Cup: Through Day 1, McGinley 1 up on Watson

It’s a tradition as old as the Ryder Cup itself, this business of analyzing and second guessing and Monday morning quarterbacking the captains’ decisions every two years. Much of it is hypothetical speculation. Specific strategies can’t be proven wrong since there’s no way of ever proving a different move correct.

That doesn’t mean there isn’t room for analysis. Rather than certain maneuvers, though, the analysis should grade the attitude as a whole. Did the captains play it cool under duress? Did they make rash decisions? Did they stick to the original plan?

We’re just two sessions into the 40th edition of the Ryder Cup, but already these questions can be posed toward European captain Paul McGinley, whose team owns a 5-3 advantage, and United States captain Tom Watson. Just after each announced their Saturday morning fourball pairings, it was easy to answer some of these questions, simply by listening.
