Michael Phelps won a 100m butterfly preliminary heat in his first competitive swim since the London Olympics and was the fastest qualifier into Thursday night’s A final at the Arena Grand Prix at Mesa, Ariz.

Phelps clocked 52.84 seconds (video here) to beat a field that included Olympic 100m backstroke champion Matt Grevers and two Americans who swam butterfly at the 2013 World Championships, Eugene Godsoe and Tom Luchsinger. Ryan Lochte swam in the heat before Phelps and posted 52.94.

“I felt like a kid, being able to race again and be back at a meet,” Phelps said on Universal Sports. “I literally feel like a 10-year-old kid, just enjoying it. I was excited to get in the water yesterday. I probably came up to the blocks a little early, a little too excited. A new experience again for me, but I like it.”

Phelps’ time is the second fastest for a U.S. man this year, .12 behind Tom Shields from an earlier meet, according to FINA.

Michael Phelps said he hit 20,000 golf balls in six months and gained 30 pounds in retirement. “There was something I missed,” Phelps said Wednesday. “I just missed being back in the water.”

Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time with 22 medals, will swim competitively for the first time since the 2012 Olympics on Thursday.

He’s bearded and at a comeback meet in Mesa, Ariz., where he is scheduled to swim the 100m butterfly on Thursday and the 50m freestyle on Friday.

    What are his expectations?

“Race,” Phelps said. “That’s really all I can ask for right now. I haven’t raced since the 400 medley relay in London. So, just being able to get back in that sort of mentality of competition. That’s one thing that I really love the most about it. When I was really competing in 2012 and throughout my career.”

  • NFL says Seahawks are too good to show in prime time

NBC Sports at NBC on Yahoo Sports4 hrs ago

There has to be a certain level of concern in Seattle after the Seahawks are tabbed to host one prime-time game, but according to ProFootballTalk’s Curtis Crabtree it’s because the NFL is wary of showing their games in prime time due to their propensity to blow visiting opponents out.

They are scheduled to appear in four prime-time games in all of 2014, but after the season opener against the Packers, they’ll play the other three nationally-televised games on the road. It won’t be an easy road back to the Super Bowl, but Mike Florio is confident Russell Wilson, Richard Sherman and the rest of the Seahawks will get plenty of national exposure.

  • SportsDash: Which favorite could be thwarted by brutal schedule?

NBC Sports at NBC on Yahoo Sports4 hrs ago

Frank Schwab (@YahooSchwab) of Yahoo Sports joined Dave Briggs (@davebriggstv) and Carolyn Manno (@carolynmanno) on SportsDash to discuss the NFL schedule that was released last night. He says, between their division matchups and their draw against the NFC East, the Colts have the easiest road to the playoffs. On the other hand, Schwab tabs the Broncos as the team with the most difficult path, noting that Denver will face 12 teams this season who finished .500 or better in 2013.
