Arizona Cardinals running back Jonathan Dwyer head-butted his wife and broke her nose after she refused his sexual advances, and punched her in the face the next day, police said Thursday.

The details surfaced in a law enforcement report a day after Dwyer was arrested on aggravated assault charges and deactivated from all team activities after he was taken into custody at the Cardinals' headquarters in Tempe. He spent a night in jail and made a brief court appearance before being released on a $25,000 bond early Thursday.

The arrest came at a time when the NFL and its commissioner are under fire over a series of violent off-the-field encounters involving some marquee players, including Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson and Greg Hardy.

The NFL has said the Dwyer case will be reviewed under the league's personal-conduct policy.

The Oakland Athletics are stunned by their September collapse, yet stuck to find a solution.

And with the way things are going, manager Bob Melvin can't talk about playoffs, let alone plan for them.

Sonny Gray and the A's kept tumbling Thursday, falling out of the top AL wild-card spot with a 7-2 loss to Texas that gave the Rangers a three-game sweep.

''It's not very fun. When you're in a race, it's supposed to be fun,'' left fielder Brandon Moss said. ''But I don't see anyone in this clubhouse having any fun, because it's not. We're pretty frustrated. We're disappointed. But it's not over, and we know that.''

The latest loss to the team with the worst record in the majors dropped the A's a half-game behind idle Kansas City for the first wild-spot slot. Oakland owned the best record in the big leagues as recently as Aug. 15.

  • NFL Football Picks Week 3: Who will pull off an upset?

ProFootballTalk: The PFT guys take a look at the teams who are underdogs this week and decide who may pull off an upset. Mike Florio isn't sure why the Giants aren't favored at home against the Texans.

Plenty of people connected to the NFL would prefer that the last week didn’t happen.  I’m part of that group, for entirely different reasons.

When it came to predicting the outcomes of games in Week Two, I had the worst showing I’ve ever had, in the time I’ve been picking games at PFT.  As it all disintegrated, I used language even more offensive than whatever Colin Kaepernick supposedly said on Sunday night.

Ultimately, I got five right and 11 wrong.  Eleven wrong .

Michael David Smith didn’t do much better, but his 8-8 showing puts him in the lead by three games, with a 17-15 mark.  I’m at 14-18 through two weeks.  Which is quite lame.

This week, we disagree on four games.  Which means I’ll likely be seven games behind MDS by next week.

  • 'Home of Golf' St. Andrews votes to allow female members

NBC Sports at NBC on Yahoo Sports23 hrs ago

The “Home of Golf” will now welcome women.

The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, which has a global membership of roughly 2,400, “voted overwhelmingly” Thursday to allow female members for the first time in its 260-year history.

A simple majority vote was required, but club secretary Peter Dawson announced that 85 percent voted in favor of admitting female members, effective immediately.

“This is a very important and positive day in the history of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club,” Dawson said, before adding: “I think it’s a very positive message for the game of golf. The R&A, in its position as a governing body for the game, I think it’s quite right that the members have agreed to embrace this concept and welcome women members to the club.”

On the same day that Scotland voted on whether to become independent, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club trumpeted its own historic decision – one that seemed inevitable once news of the vote was made public months ago.

  • LA Angels win AL West in spite of 2011's expensive rebuild

The Angels went all-in at the end of 2011, signing C.J. Wilson and Albert Pujols then inking Josh Hamilton a year later. HardballTalk’s Craig Calcaterra says while these big names obviously helped, Los Angeles won the AL West in spite of them.
