  • Mannix: NBA's proposed lottery reform was 'dumbest idea in the world'

NBC Sports at NBC on Yahoo Sports10 hrs ago

For at least another season, Philadelphia’s uber-tanking system will pay dividends.

In a surprise move, NBA owners voted down plans to flatten out the lottery odds system, a story broken by Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports. Other sources have confirmed this.

Just 48 hours ago lottery reform seemed like a lock to pass, with only Philadelphia opposed, but a push from Thunder GM Sam Presti among others fearing it could hurt small market teams’ ability get top stars seemed to swing the vote (the no side needed at least 8 votes to block the proposal).

I think this was the smart play — the owners came close to making unstudied dramatic changes as an emotional reaction to the actions of one team. That is just courting trouble.

  • How did Mo'ne Davis star in Chevy commercial but retain amateur status?

NBC Sports at NBC on Yahoo Sports10 hrs ago

Mo'ne Davis made a name for herself during this year's Little League World Series, and the 13-year-old Philadelphia native parlayed her relatively newfound fame into a Chevy sponsorship. Despite being paid to appear in a commercial for the auto company, Davis has retained her amateur status because the money was set in a trust and thus, there will be no effect on her college eligibility.

Though he thinks it's a good thing that Davis' amateurism has remained unblemished, Dan Patrick has a problem with the NCAA stepping into the matters of such a young athlete. Additionally, Patrick wonders if college athletes, a number of whom have recently perturbed the NCAA by profiting off their own likeness, could use the trust strategy employed by Davis.

  • Sidney Crosby jabs Philadelphia with Halloween costume

NBC Sports at NBC on Yahoo Sports15 hrs ago

Apparently a career's worth of hate from Flyers fans didn't stop Sidney Crosby from honoring Philly with his Halloween costume this year.

    Yep. Rocky Balboa.

Is it possible Crosby just really likes Rocky,  or is this a subtle jab at Flyers fans? If it's the latter ... well we've got to admit that's pretty clever.

  • Madison Bumgarner's playoff performance shows he's truly special

NBC Sports at NBC on Yahoo Sports15 hrs ago

The Giants cared enough to send their very best.

What other way to describe Madison Bumgarner in the World Series?

With their left-handed ace mixing a crackling fastball, a snapping cutter, a sweeping curve and even a surprising, 68-mph yakker, the Giants dealt the Kansas City Royals their first loss of the postseason and took a 7-1 victory in Game 1 of the Fall Classic on Tuesday.

The world’s largest greeting card company is headquartered here. With Hunter Pence’s home run in a three-run first inning, and Bumgarner pitching himself deeper into World Series lore, the Giants sent the Royals something between condolences and regrets. The home team and powder-blue crowd, which waited nearly three decades for the World Series to return to Kauffman Stadium, can only hope to get well soon in Game 2.

The Royals had gone 8-0 in this postseason. But they're playing a team that has dispatched all nine playoff opponents they've faced in the Bruce Bochy era. Back on that Halloween Night in 2010, when Madison Bumgarner was barely 21 and shut out the Texas Rangers in Arlington, he said he couldn’t be sure if he’d ever reach the World Series again in his career.

NBC Sports at NBC on Yahoo Sports1 day ago

ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio discusses the discretion used by the Seattle Seahawks in the trade of Percy Harvin  and what they might have gotten had they opened up discussions and reached out to more teams. Though low-profile trade talks can be beneficial in their curtailing of off-the-field distractions, Florio thinks the Seahawks limited their return on Harvin by keeping teams like the Patriots out of the discussion.
