Montgomery, who has worked for the team since 1971 and took over as president in 1997, will be replaced on an interim basis by senior advisor and former general manager, Pat Gillick.

Montgomery, 68, underwent cancer surgery earlier this year.

  • Daniel Snyder 'in the process' of planning new Redskins stadium

NBC Sports at NBC on Yahoo Sports5 hrs ago

The Washington Redskins organization has “started the process” of designing a new stadium to serve as the team’s home, owner Dan Snyder told Comcast SportsNet in an exclusive interview Wednesday.

“Whether it's Washington, D.C., whether it's another stadium in Maryland, whether it's a stadium in Virginia, we've started the process,” Snyder said.

“We are going to push forward. We've started meeting with architectural firms. We are in the process of developing because it is a long term that you do it.”

The current home of the Redskins, FedEx Field, opened in 1997. Prior to the opening of FedEx, the Redskins played at RFK Stadium, which opened in 1961.

According to Snyder, plans for a new stadium have RFK in mind.

“We've already seen some preliminary drawings and I'm going to be very retro with it,” he told CSN. “It's gonna feel like RFK. It's gonna move like RFK. I love that, I actually asked architectural firms to do it and they said that they can do it. I said that I think the lower bowl sections are going to want to rock the stadium like the old days.”

  • Last-place Cubs might be closer to contending than you'd think

NBC Sports at NBC on Yahoo Sports5 hrs ago

Jenna Corrado and HardballTalk's Craig Calcaterra discuss the future of the Chicago Cubs, who are in last place in the NL Central but boast three of the top ten prospects in baseball according to MLB.com. Just Wednesday night, outfielder Jorge Soler homered in his major-league debut, while fellow blue-chip rookie Javier Baez doubled and drove in a pair of runs. With Starlin Castro still just 24 years of age and all-world third baseman Kris Bryant flying through Chicago's minor-league system, general manager Theo Epstein and the Cubs may not be too far away from becoming legitimate contenders.

  • Report: Tom Brady was “very upset” with Logan Mankins deal

NBC Sports at NBC on Yahoo Sports5 hrs ago

Over the years, Tom Brady has taken less money than he could have made, in order to keep trusted parts around him.

And he didn’t say much about it in the past, as he was left with a bunch of receivers who remember watching him as kids.

But this time might be different.

According to Jason Cole of Bleacher Report, Brady was “very upset” with the trade of Logan Mankins, adding that “he was not happy with the move.”

Trading Mankins to the Buccaneers was a completely mercenary move, after asking the Pro Bowl guard to take a pay cut before shipping him out.

And that’s all within the realm of doing business, until it infringes on the trust Brady has put in the team by working his numbers around those of others.

  • Tony Stewart's status for Atlanta still up in the air

Jeff Burton joins the NASCAR America crew to discuss Tony Stewart's status for the Oral-B USA 500 at Atlanta. Burton says there has been no word yet from Stewart, but it could be a last minute decision.

While the word is still out on Stewart, Jeff Gordon, who’s having one of the best seasons of his career in 2014, will make his 750th Cup start this weekend in Atlanta.

It’s a rather fitting venue too, since Gordon made his first start at the old AMS layout in 1992, prior to its 1997 reconfiguration. He has five total Atlanta victories, his last coming in a thrilling scrap with teammate Jimmie Johnson in 2011.

This week, Gordon will be back in the Panasonic Toughbook colors aboard his No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet.

With 750 starts, all consecutive, Gordon ranks 11th on the all-time list. Ken Schrader sits in 10th with 763 career starts; Gordon would enter the top-10 all-time at, fittingly, Atlanta 2015.

  • Cubs' prospect Jorge Soler sparkles in MLB debut

NBC Sports at NBC on Yahoo Sports8 hrs ago

Theo Epstein wouldn’t call it jealousy. But Jorge Soler definitely noticed Kris Bryant and Javier Baez, maybe feeling like those elite prospects had passed him by, using it as fuel to show he belongs.

The Cubs president of baseball operations unwrapped the $30 million Cuban outfielder, and Soler homered off Mat Latos with his first big-league swing on Wednesday night at Great American Ball Park. That shot traveled 423 feet to left-center, and Soler added an RBI single in a 7-5 loss to the Cincinnati Reds.

It’s easy to tie it up in a bow now, pretend everything went according to The Plan and dream about the Cubs being contenders in 2015.

This won’t make peace with the rooftop owners, speed up the Wrigley Field renovations or close the TV megadeal. The major-league payroll is nowhere close to where a big-market team should be. Stay tuned to see if the business side can crack the code to this leveraged partnership.

Still, the how and why of Soler’s rise should encourage Cubs fans desperate for good headlines and convince the Chicago media just catching up after Bears training camp that this will be a big story.
